ISO 4044:2017 specifies how to prepare a test sample of leather for chemical analysis. The test sample can be either ground or cut into small pieces. Unless specified in this document, the method to be used depends on the size of leather sample available for testing.

EN ISO 4044:2017 - Leather - Chemical tests - Preparation of chemical test samples specifies standardized procedures for preparing leather specimens for chemical analysis. Published by CEN/ISO and prepared with IULTCS input, the standard defines two accepted preparation routes - grinding to produce “ground leather” or cutting into small pieces - and gives practical requirements for apparatus, sample conditioning, storage, and reporting.

  • Do not allow sample temperature to exceed 40 °C during drying or grinding.
  • Wet samples (> ~30% moisture) should be pre-dried at ≤ 40 °C; if dried, condition per ISO 2419 before testing.
• Cleaning and contamination
  • Ensure mills and collection devices are clean; do not use water for cleaning. If sufficient sample is available, run and discard a few initial small pieces to purge the mill before collecting the test sample.
• Storage and reporting
  • Mix test material thoroughly after preparation and store in a clean, dry, airtight container away from heat sources.
  • Report the chosen preparation method in the test report (6.4).
