This document defines a classification of bicycle usage conditions and it provides a method of identifying bicycles and components for use within this system.
This classification gives a uniform set of usage definitions within the bicycle industry and it includes a set of graphical indicators to provide retailers and consumers with an indication of the intended use of a particular bicycle or aftermarket components.

EN 17406:2020+A1:2021 is a CEN European standard that defines a uniform classification for bicycle usage. It provides a method to identify bicycles and components according to intended use, using a set of graphical indicators (pictograms) so retailers and consumers can quickly understand the recommended application. The standard covers both conventional bicycles and EPAC (electrically power assisted cycles).

  • Pictogram of “instruction for use”
  • Minimum 3 mm character size within pictograms
• Durability test for labels: Labels shall remain legible and not removable or curled after being rubbed 15 s with a cloth soaked in water and 15 s with a cloth soaked in petroleum spirit.
• Manufacturer information: Labels must be visible on frames and described in the instruction manual. Component labels may be applied to packaging. Manufacturers are responsible for selecting appropriate testing requirements for specific models.
