prEN 3682-002 is a draft European Standard from CEN for aerospace electrical connectors, specifically rectangular plug and receptacle connectors with interchangeable inserts for rack-to-panel use and a continuous operating temperature of 150 °C. It specifies the common conditions, performance data, contact arrangements, and related interface details for engineers, manufacturers, and buyers working with this connector family.

What does prEN 3682-002 specify?

prEN 3682-002 sets the common requirements for plug and receptacle connectors with interchangeable insulators, designed for rack-to-panel applications at 150 °C continuous operating temperature. It is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, terms and definitions, model description, operating conditions, product standards, polarization, contact arrangements and insert combinations, contacts, sealing plugs, tooling, and assembly and wiring instructions.

The introduction states that this connector family is derived from MIL-DTL-83527 and is intermateable with it. That matters in practice because interface compatibility can affect interchangeability during design, procurement, and maintenance planning.

What are the key requirements of prEN 3682-002?

prEN 3682-002 focuses on the connector envelope, electrical performance, environmental capability, and the allowed contact layouts. The most important points are the model range, cable compatibility, operating limits, polarization system, and the approved insert combinations.

Model and construction

Clause 4 describes electrical rectangular rack-panel connectors with environmental resistance, shell sizes 2, 3, and 4, and crimp contact class R. In practice, this tells the reader which connector body sizes and contact style are covered by the standard.

Permissible cables and wiring basis

Clause 5.1 gives the cable dimensions that support the connector performance, including conductor sizes and outer cable diameters. It also ties performance to the specified accessories and wiring tools. This matters because the connector is qualified as a system with defined cable ranges, not as a free-choice interface.

Electrical operating conditions

Clause 5.2.1 sets the electrical conditions, including rated current according to the contact standards, insulation resistance of 5 000 MΩ at ambient temperature, and withstand voltage values for sea level and for 33 000 m. Different values are given for 22 AWG contacts, thicker gauge contacts, and triaxial, coaxial, and quadrax contacts. For users, this is the key data for insulation coordination, test planning, and selecting the right contact type for the application.

Climatic and mechanical performance

Clause 5.2.2 defines the operating temperature range from -65 °C to 150 °C, and requires corrosion resistance and fluid resistance in accordance with EN 3682-001. Clause 5.2.3 sets mechanical endurance at 500 mating and unmating operations. These requirements matter when checking whether the connector suits the aircraft environment and the intended maintenance cycle.

Product family links

Clause 6 connects the part to the rest of the EN 3682 series. Inserts are covered by EN 3682-003, and shell sizes 2, 3, and 4 are split into separate plug and receptacle product standards. This helps purchasers and designers choose the correct companion parts instead of treating the connector as a single standalone item.

Polarization and keying

Clause 7 defines the coding key positions and states that they provide 99 standard locating codes. Figures 1 and 2, together with Tables 3 and 4, show the key positions from the front of the connector. In practice, this prevents incorrect mating between similar connectors and supports controlled polarization during installation.

Contact arrangements and insert combinations

Clause 8 is the main selection section. Table 5 and Figures 3 to 24 define the approved contact arrangements by insulator type, number of contacts, and contact size, including mixed arrangements with coaxial, triaxial, and quadrax contacts. Table 6 then assigns insert combination codes by shell size and cavity population. This is the data engineers use to define the exact connector variant for a wiring layout.

Contacts, sealing plugs, tooling, and assembly

Clause 9 lists the usable contact types and their EN 3155 part references. Clause 10 requires sealing plugs from EN 4529-002 in grommet cavities that correspond to unwired contacts. Clause 11 points to the EN 3155 series for crimping, installation, and extraction tooling, and clause 12 requires assembly and wiring in accordance with EN 3197. These clauses matter because the connector is only valid when assembled with the right contacts, blanks, tools, and installation method.

What terms does prEN 3682-002 define?

  • LRU - line replaceable unit, a replaceable aircraft unit used in the connector context.
  • Polarization - the coded key position system that controls how mating connectors are oriented and matched.
  • Contact arrangement - the defined mix of contacts in an insert, including size and quantity.
  • Insert combination - the coded combination of insert layouts used on a shell for the cavities A to F.
  • Shell size - the connector body size class, here 2, 3, or 4.
  • Crimp contact class R - the contact style identified for this connector family in the model description.
  • Rack to panel - the mounting style intended for equipment rack and panel interfaces.
  • Interchangeable insulators - inserts that can be selected in different approved combinations within the connector family.

Who uses prEN 3682-002?

prEN 3682-002 is used by aerospace connector designers, harness and wiring engineers, test laboratories, and suppliers of aircraft electrical interconnection hardware. It is also relevant to quality managers and buyers who need to verify connector performance, contact layouts, and compatibility with the rest of the EN 3682 family.

The standard is especially useful where equipment uses rack-panel connectors, mixed signal and power contacts, or maintenance-oriented designs that must match approved insert combinations and tooling. Because the document is linked to EN 3197, it also supports installation and assembly work on aircraft electrical and optical interconnection systems.

What changed in prEN 3682-002 from the previous edition?

prEN 3682-002 will supersede EN 3682-002:2013. The foreword states two technical changes with respect to that edition:

  • Table 6 insert combinations now introduces codes 288 to 292.
  • The contact arrangements have been updated.

Which standards are used with prEN 3682-002?

  • EN 2591-100 - provides the general test methods for electrical and optical connection elements used when verifying connector performance.
  • EN 3197 - gives the assembly and wiring instruction framework for aircraft electrical and optical interconnection systems.
  • EN 3682-001 - provides the technical specification used for corrosion resistance and fluid resistance.
  • EN 4529-002 - identifies the sealing plugs to use in unwired grommet cavities.
  • EN 3682-003 to EN 3682-009 - define the inserts, receptacles, and plugs that make up the product family for shell sizes 2, 3, and 4.
  • EN 3155 series parts - define the contact types and the related tooling used with the connector, including crimp, solder, coaxial, triaxial, and quadrax contacts.

What does the prEN 3682-002 document contain?

Clause 5 contains the operating-condition data, including a cable table and the electrical, climatic, and mechanical conditions used for qualification and selection. Clause 7 contains the polarization system, supported by two figures and two tables of key positions. Clause 8 contains the detailed contact-arrangement tables and the insert-combination codes, including the shell-size and cavity layouts used for product definition.

The document also includes a contact table in clause 9, a sealing-plug rule in clause 10, tooling guidance in clause 11, and an assembly-and-wiring requirement in clause 12. Together, these sections provide the technical basis for specifying, building, and installing the connector family without reproducing the underlying design tables here.
