EN ISO 17871:2020/FprA2 is CEN’s draft Amendment 2 to the gas cylinder standard for quick-release cylinder valves. It updates the specification and type-testing rules for these valves, with changes to scope wording, reference editions, leakage and hydraulic test requirements, and marking. Manufacturers, test laboratories, quality teams, and buyers of valve assemblies use it to check how quick-release cylinder valves are specified and verified.
What does EN ISO 17871:2020/FprA2 specify?
EN ISO 17871:2020/FprA2 specifies targeted amendments to the existing quick-release cylinder valve standard. The amendment keeps the document focused on the valve’s closure function, and it updates the clauses that control conformity, testing, and marking.
It revises Clause 1, Clause 2, Clause 4.1 to 4.2.11, Clause 5, and Annex A references. In practice, that means the amendment changes how the base standard points to related standards and how several tests and marks are applied.
| Part of the amendment | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Clause 1 | Scope wording and application notes |
| Clause 2 | Updated referenced standards |
| Clause 4.1 to 4.2.11 | Technical requirements and test conditions |
| Clause 5 | Marking rules |
| Annex A references | Test method cross-references |
What are the key requirements of EN ISO 17871:2020/FprA2?
EN ISO 17871:2020/FprA2 mainly tightens how quick-release cylinder valves are linked to other valve standards, which tests apply, and what has to be marked on the product. The practical effect is that manufacturers must align design verification and type testing with the updated reference editions and the special cases listed in the amendment.
- Scope is limited to the closure function - Clause 1 says the document covers the valve as a closure only. If a valve includes other functions, those functions are handled by other standards, but they are not requirements of this document. That matters when a product combines closure with filling or control features.
- Updated reference standards apply - Clause 2 and Clause 4.1 replace references to earlier editions with ISO 10297:2024 and ISO 17879:2026, and keep ISO 23826 where applicable. This means conformity checking must use the current editions named in the amendment.
- General conformity is based on the named companion standards - Clause 4.1 says quick-release cylinder valves shall meet ISO 10297, ISO 17879, or ISO 23826, except where this document gives different or extra requirements. In practice, the valve maker must check both the base standard and the quick-release-specific differences.
- Leakage and endurance testing are adjusted - Clause 4.2.5 sets the total external leakage limit at 12 cm3/h when that test is performed, and Clause 4.2.10 says some internal and transport/storage leak-tightness tests are not needed in specific cases. This affects the test plan and can reduce unnecessary testing for certain valve designs.
- Special rules apply to fixed fire-fighting systems and type A valves - Clause 4.2.10 gives exemptions for quick-release cylinder valves used only in covered fixed fire-fighting systems at low temperature, and it exempts type A valves from internal and external leak-tightness tests before the endurance test. This matters for qualification because the test sequence depends on the end use and valve type.
- Hydraulic testing is clarified - Clause 4.2.7 and Clause 4.2.9 rename the hydraulic tests and require evidence that the valve body can withstand the relevant pressure, with p_vht calculated for extinguishing agents charged with compressed gases. The maker has to show structural strength, not just functional operation.
- Marking must be permanent and legible - Clause 5 requires marking before service by forging, etching, hard metal stamping, engraving, pin stamping, laser etching, or an equivalent method, and excludes adhesive labels. For users, that means the valve identity and key data must survive service conditions.
What terms does EN ISO 17871:2020/FprA2 define?
- Quick-release cylinder valve - A cylinder valve designed for rapid opening and closing in gas cylinder service.
- Residual pressure valve (RPV) - A valve type mentioned as having additional requirements in ISO 15996.
- Filling connection non-return valve - A non-return valve in a separated filling connection that must meet specific endurance requirements.
- Type A - A quick-release valve design category that is treated differently in the leak-tightness testing clauses.
- Intermittent discharge - An operating case that triggers a specific internal leak-tightness test at the higher test pressure.
- p_vht - The hydraulic pressure test value used in the amended hydraulic strength requirements.
Who uses EN ISO 17871:2020/FprA2?
EN ISO 17871:2020/FprA2 is used by valve manufacturers, cylinder manufacturers, and test laboratories that perform type testing for gas cylinders. It is also relevant to quality managers, certification bodies, and regulators who need to check whether a quick-release cylinder valve meets the current technical conditions.
It is especially relevant in gas cylinder applications, pressure equipment work, and fixed fire-fighting systems. The amendment also matters to buyers and integrators because it affects what must be tested, what can be exempted, and what must be marked on the valve.
What changed in EN ISO 17871:2020/FprA2 from the previous edition?
Compared with the previous referenced editions, EN ISO 17871:2020/FprA2 updates the cross-references to ISO 10297:2024 and ISO 17879:2026. It also:
- Narrows the scope note to the closure function only
- Adds a note pointing to extra requirements for fixed fire-fighting systems and residual pressure valves
- Revises several leakage test conditions and exemptions
- Clarifies hydraulic test wording and pressure symbols
- Tightens marking language and removes adhesive labels as a permitted marking method
- Updates Annex A references and removes the “at normal temperature and pressure (NTP)” wording in A.2.2
Which standards are used with EN ISO 17871:2020/FprA2?
EN ISO 17871:2020/FprA2 points to several companion standards for detailed requirements and test methods:
- ISO 10297:2024 - general cylinder valve requirements and test procedures used throughout the amendment
- ISO 17879:2026 - alternative cylinder valve requirements and test procedures used where applicable
- ISO 23826:2021 - another applicable valve standard referenced for alternative requirements and tests
- ISO 16003 - additional requirements for quick-release cylinder valves in fixed fire-fighting systems
- EN 12094-4 - regional requirements for that same fire-fighting application
- ISO 15996 - additional requirements for residual pressure valves (RPV)
What does the EN ISO 17871:2020/FprA2 document contain?
This amendment contains clause-by-clause updates rather than a full rewrite of the standard. The technical content centers on scope wording, updated cross-references, leakage test conditions, hydraulic test terminology, and marking rules.
It also points to specific test tables and procedures in ISO 10297:2024, ISO 17879:2026, and ISO 23826:2021. For certification and type testing, the document tells readers which checks still apply, which checks are waived in special cases, and how to document valve identity and test compliance.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).

“NOTE 3 Certain specific requirements for quick-release cylinder valves for fixed fire-fighting systems
in addition to those that are given in this document are specified in ISO 16003 and at a regional level, e.g. in
EN 12094–4. Certain specific requirements for residual pressure valves (RPV), in addition to those that are
given in this document, are given in ISO 15996.”
