Overview
EN ISO 3964:2016 (ISO 3964:2016) defines the coupling dimensions and performance requirements for connectors between dental handpieces and motors on dental units. The standard specifies nominal dimensions, tolerances and the extraction (uncoupling) force for coupling systems that convey rotation energy and supply air, water (spray) and light to handpieces.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Couplings between straight/angled handpieces and motors; includes internal/external spray and light supply variants.
- Classification: Four types
- Type 1: no internal spray, no light
- Type 2: internal spray, no light
- Type 3: internal spray with light
- Type 4: light, no internal spray
- Coupling dimensions: Nominal dimensions and tolerances illustrated in figures and summarized in Table 1. Important values:
- Motor coupling dimension X (max): Long 31.8 mm, Middle 24.8 mm, Short 22.8 mm, Extra short 18.8 mm
- Handpiece coupling dimension X (min): Long 32 mm, Middle 25 mm, Short 23 mm, Extra short 19 mm
- Mechanical features:
- Grooves and sealing-ring geometry as provided by the manufacturer
- Edges shall be burr-free or rounded
- Alternative locking designs permitted; manufacturer must indicate handpiece length type in instructions for use
- Coupling (extraction) force: Minimum extraction force to disconnect a connected handpiece is ≥ 30 N, or the motor design must allow release of cooling-air pressure
- Sampling and tests:
- One representative sample per coupling type for testing
- Dimension measurement accuracy: ±0.01 mm for linear dimensions, ±1° for angles
- Coupling force measurement accuracy: ±0.5 N
- Normative references include ISO 1942, ISO 14457, ISO 2768‑1 and ISO 2768‑2
Applications and users

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
