Protective clothing - Test method: Determination of behaviour of materials on impact of small splashes of molten metal
This European Standard specifies a test method designed to evaluate the behaviour of materials used for protective clothing when such materials are struck by small liquid metal splashes, especially when molten steel particles are projected against the material. It applies to any pliable material, or assembly of materials, designed to protect workers against small splashes of molten metal. The results obtained by this method enable the behaviour of different materials which have undergone this test under standardized conditions to be compared. They do not permit conclusions with respect to contacts with large splashes of molten cast iron or other metal to be drawn, neither will they allow the behaviour of complete garments under industrial conditions to be predicted.

Overview
EN 348:1992 (CEN) defines a standardized test method to evaluate how materials used in protective clothing behave when impacted by small splashes of molten metal, in particular molten steel particles. The method applies to any pliable material or assembly intended to protect workers from small molten metal splashes. Results enable comparison between materials tested under the same conditions but are not intended to predict performance against large molten-metal castings or to represent the behaviour of complete garments in real industrial situations.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability: Materials and assemblies for protection against small molten-metal splashes; limitations for large splashes and whole-garment prediction.
- Test method specification: A controlled procedure for applying small molten-metal droplets to material specimens under standardized conditions to generate comparable results.
- Assessment of behaviour: Observation and reporting of material responses after impact (for example, surface damage, adherence of metal, penetration or ignition-observations recorded per the standard).
- Comparability and reproducibility: Conditions and reporting requirements designed so different laboratories and manufacturers can compare material performance reliably.
- National adoption: The CEN standard can be adopted by national bodies; some national editions may carry different publication dates while retaining the EN technical content.
Applications
- PPE manufacturers evaluating materials (fabrics, laminates, coated textiles) for splash resistance in welding, foundry, and metalworking environments.
- Test laboratories performing material qualification and batch verification for molten-metal splash protection.
- Safety engineers and procurement officers selecting materials or components for garments used in operations with small molten-metal projection risks.
- Regulatory and standards professionals referencing a harmonized test method for comparative performance data.
Who Should Use This Standard
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) designers and manufacturers
- Occupational safety and health professionals in metalworking industries (welding, casting, forging)
- Accredited testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
- Specifiers and purchasers of protective clothing for molten-metal exposure
Related Standards
- Other CEN/ISO standards and industry norms address whole-garment performance, large-splash scenarios, or specific hazard classes; consult the standards catalogue or national standards body to identify complementary test methods.
