Overview
EN 14049:2003/A1:2005 - published by CEN (Technical Committee CEN/TC 334) - specifies calculation principles and measurement methods for water application intensity (WAI) in irrigation techniques. The amendment A1 (2005) updates the original 2003 text and clarifies formulas and measurement provisions for moving systems such as center-pivot irrigation. The standard focuses on how to calculate irrigation duration, average depth applied and the resulting intensity at any point along a rotating pivot system. (Note: a UAP of 3 months applies - administrative implementation detail.)
Key topics
- Calculation principles for WAI
- Formulas for irrigation duration t(r) at radius r from the pivot and for average depth D applied in one machine pass (see equations in clauses 4.2.5.3.2).
- Expression for average water application intensity I(r) as a function of flow Q, distances r and R, wetted radii W and R, and machine speed V.
- Maximum average WAI
- Identification of the location of maximum average intensity (typically at the outermost wetted radius) and the simplified expression for Imax when r = R (clause 4.2.5.3.3).
- Measurement variables and definitions
- Key variables defined include flow rate Q (m3/h), distance from pivot r, last tower distance R (m), effective wetted radii of pivot and sprinkler (R, W), and machine speed V (m/h).
- Scope and normative references
- References EN ISO 11545 for effective wetted radius definitions and gives procedural requirements for national adoption.
Applications
- Designing and calibrating center-pivot and lateral-move irrigation systems to ensure target application rates.
- Calculating real-world WAI for scheduling irrigation events and balancing soil water budgets.
- Verifying equipment performance (manufacturers, test labs) and ensuring conformity with agronomic requirements.
- Modeling irrigation uniformity and diagnosing under/over-application zones across a pivot span.
Who should use this standard
- Agricultural engineers and irrigation designers
- Farm managers and agronomists planning irrigation applications
- Irrigation equipment manufacturers and service technicians
- Testing laboratories, certification bodies and standards adopters in Europe
