Overview
EN 12484-5:2002 is the CEN standard that defines testing methods for automatic turf irrigation systems. It specifies field procedures and acceptance criteria used at commissioning to verify the uniformity of water distribution and hydraulic performance of automatic sprinkler and localized (emitter) systems. The standard references ISO 7749 test methods and is intended to ensure systems meet the design requirements for effective, water-efficient turf irrigation.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Tests to evaluate uniformity of water distribution at commissioning of automatic turf irrigation systems.
- Referenced standards: EN 12484 Parts 1–4 (owner programme, design, control/management, installation/acceptance) and ISO 7749-1/-2 for rotating-sprinkler design and test methods.
- Measurement device accuracy: allowable instrument error - pressure 2%, flow 3%.
- System inlet checks: inlet pressure and total flow must be within ±5% of the project design values.
- Sprinkler pressure requirements:
- Station pressure adjusted to design pressure and kept within ±4% during tests.
- Pressure variation between most- and least-pressurized sprinklers on a station ≤ 20%.
- Water distribution uniformity (sprinklers):
- Tests follow ISO 7749-2 using water collectors arranged in a square grid matched to sprinkler spacing.
- Collector characteristics: cylindrical top third, identical size/shape, sharp collecting edge; height ≥ twice average collected depth and ≥ 15 cm; opening diameter = 1.5 × height and ≥ 8.5 cm.
- Grid spacing: dependent on sprinkler radius - >10 m: max 2 m; 5–10 m: max 1 m; <5 m: max 0.5 m.
- Atmospheric limits: wind measured every 15 min; sensor at 2.0 m (or at projectile height for high-trajectory nozzles). Maximum permissible wind velocity 0.9 m/s.
- Uniformity quantified by the Christiansen uniformity coefficient (CU) computed from collector volumes.
- Localized irrigation (emitters):
- Verify inlet pressure per design; measure emitter flow patterns on selected laterals.
- Uniformity coefficient (CU) for localized systems computed as 100 × (Qmin / Qmean) where Qmin is the average of the four lowest flows and Qmean is the average of 16 flow measurements.
- Minimum emitter flow measurement: 3 minutes and at least 200 cm³ collected.
Applications and users
- Practical uses: commissioning and acceptance testing, performance verification, troubleshooting hydraulics or coverage issues, verifying contractor installations, optimizing water efficiency on turf areas (sports fields, parks, golf courses, municipal lawns).
- Primary users: irrigation designers, commissioning engineers, landscape contractors, facility managers, sports turf managers, certification bodies and irrigation equipment manufacturers.
