Overview
EN 681-3:2000/A1:2002 is a CEN European amendment specifying material requirements for elastomeric pipe joint seals made from cellular (foam) vulcanized rubber for water and drainage applications. Prepared by CEN/TC 208, this amendment updates EN 681-3:2000 and includes provisions for conformity assessment and CE marking under the EU Construction Products Directive. The standard applies to seals used in sewerage and drainage and excludes contact with water intended for human consumption.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material scope: Cellular materials of vulcanized rubber intended for pipe joint seals in drainage and wastewater systems.
- Performance characteristics addressed: dimensional tolerances, tightness (gas and liquid), durability (ageing, compression set, tensile/elongation behaviour) and resistance to liquids and chemicals as relevant to drainage use.
- Referenced test standards: normative references include ISO 3302-1 (dimensional tolerances), ISO 37 and ISO 815 (tensile and ageing), ISO 1817 (fluid resistance), ISO 188 and ISO 3384 (ageing procedures), and ISO 1431-1 (ozone resistance).
- Factory production control (FPC): Clause replacing the title “Factory production control” emphasises manufacturer responsibility for ongoing quality control and initial type testing.
- Conformity & CE marking: Annex ZA links the standard to the EU Construction Products Directive, defines the attestation of conformity system (System 4 for the intended use), and outlines CE marking and declaration of conformity requirements.
- Exclusions and safety: The standard addresses release of dangerous substances and informs manufacturers of additional legislative requirements that may apply.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses EN 681-3: seal manufacturers, product designers, testing laboratories, procurement specialists for drainage infrastructure, installers of sewer and stormwater pipe systems, and regulatory bodies.
- Typical applications: gaskets and joint seals in sewerage, stormwater, drainage pipes, and underground drainage networks where cellular elastomeric seals are used to provide watertight and gastight joints in non-potable systems.
- Why it matters: Ensures material selection and quality control produce durable, leak-resistant seals compatible with common drainage environments and facilitates CE marking for placing products on the European market.
Related standards
- EN 681 series (other parts covering non-cellular elastomeric seals)
- ISO 3302-1, ISO 37, ISO 815, ISO 1817, ISO 188, ISO 3384, ISO 1431-1 - referenced test and performance methods
This summary helps stakeholders understand EN 681-3:2000/A1:2002 for material specification, testing expectations, conformity routes, and practical deployment of elastomeric cellular seals in water and drainage infrastructure.
