Abstract

This document specifies the technical delivery conditions for corrosion-resistant alloy seamless products for casing, tubing, coupling stock and accessory material (including coupling stock and accessory material from bar) for two product specification levels:
PSL-1, which is the basis of this document;
PSL-2, which provides additional requirements for a product that is intended to be both corrosion and cracking resistant for the environments and qualification method specified in Annex G and in the ISO 15156 series or NACE MR0175.
This document contains no provisions relating to the connection of individual lengths of pipe. Demonstration of conformance to ISO 15156-3:2020 or NACE MR0175-2021 of material affected by end sizing, connection manufacture or welding operations is outside the scope of this document.
This document contains provisions relating to marking of tubing and casing after threading.
This document is applicable to the following five groups of products:
a)       group 1, which is composed of stainless alloys with a martensitic or martensitic/ferritic structure;
b)       group 2, which is composed of stainless alloys with a ferritic-austenitic structure, such as duplex and super-duplex stainless alloy;
c)        group 3, which is composed of stainless alloys with an austenitic structure (iron base);
d)       group 4, which is composed of nickel-based alloys with an austenitic structure (nickel base);
e)       group 5, which is composed of bar only (Annex F) in age-hardened (AH) nickel-based alloys with austenitic structure.

prEN ISO 13680 is a CEN draft for corrosion-resistant alloy seamless products used as casing, tubing, coupling stock and accessory material in the oil and gas industries including lower carbon energy. It specifies technical delivery conditions for manufacturers and purchasers of these products, with a basic level called PSL-1 and an additional PSL-2 level for products intended to be corrosion and cracking resistant in the environments covered by Annex G and the NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 series. The standard also covers marking after threading, surface condition, inspection, testing, and documentation.

What does prEN ISO 13680 specify?

prEN ISO 13680 specifies how corrosion-resistant alloy seamless products are to be supplied as casing, tubing, coupling stock and accessory material, including coupling stock and accessory material made from bar. The document is written for contractual supply: it tells the purchaser what to state, and tells the manufacturer what to control, test, mark and certify.

The scope covers these current product groups:

  • group 1 - stainless alloys with martensitic or martensitic/ferritic structure
  • group 2 - stainless alloys with ferritic-austenitic structure, including duplex and super-duplex
  • group 3 - solid solution nickel-based alloys with an austenitic structure
  • group 5 - bar only, in age-hardened (AH) nickel-based alloys with an austenitic structure, covered in Annex F

The standard excludes the connection of individual lengths of pipe, except for the clarifications in Annex J. It also places conformance work for material affected by end sizing, connection manufacture or welding outside its scope.

What are the key requirements of prEN ISO 13680?

prEN ISO 13680 sets requirements for order information, melting and product manufacture, material properties, testing, dimensions, surface condition, marking, documentation and facility capability. In practice, this means the buyer must specify the product clearly, and the producer must demonstrate that every length meets the agreed chemical, mechanical, dimensional and inspection requirements.

Ordering and product definition

Clause 5 requires the purchaser to state the minimum order information, such as quantity, product designation, reference to the standard, material category or grade, dimensions, tolerances, length requirements, inspection needs, threading provisions and packaging or storage requirements. For PSL-2, additional requirements have to be stated explicitly; if PSL-2 is not requested, PSL-1 applies.

This matters because the delivery conditions depend on the exact product form and service intent. A vague order can leave the supplier without enough information to select the right grade, test plan or marking.

Manufacturing route, process control and traceability

Clause 6 controls how the product is made. The document allows specified melting practices and requires the product manufacturing route, starting material and heat-treatment or cold-hardened condition to follow the listed process options. It also requires process control measures that avoid surface effects such as chromium depletion where heat treatment is part of manufacture.

The clause also limits end sizing, straightening and stress relieving by product group, and it requires validation for certain processes. Manufacturers must keep heat, re-melt ingot and lot identity until testing is complete, and each length must stay identifiable so test and inspection results can be linked back to that length.

Clause 6.7 introduces MPQT when it is specified, and Clause 6.8 links new alloy or grade updates to supporting evidence and the Annex H process. For a buyer, this is the clause that ties together qualification of a manufacturing route and confidence in repeat production.

Chemical, mechanical and integrity requirements

Clause 7 defines the core product requirements. Tables in Annex A and Annex C give the chemical composition limits for PSL-1 and PSL-2, and group 2 also uses pitting-resistance equivalent number (PREN). Room-temperature tensile properties, hardness limits and through-wall hardness variation are specified by tables, with PSL-2 having its own property tables.

Clause 7 also covers Charpy V-notch impact requirements, including low-temperature testing for group 2 at -46 °C (-50 °F), and flattening tests when specimen geometry prevents the required impact specimens from being machined. For groups 2 and 3, the flattening test becomes the fallback method when the pipe size does not permit suitable impact specimens.

The same clause also covers corrosion properties, microstructure requirements, surface condition and defects. In practice, this is where the material is checked for the properties that matter in service - strength, toughness, corrosion resistance and metallurgical soundness.

Dimensions, ends and fit

Clause 8 covers outside diameter, wall thickness, mass, length, tolerances, straightness, drift and product ends. Plain-end product ends must be burr-free, and plain-end casing or tubing has a defined out-of-squareness requirement. Standardized dimension ranges are listed in the annex tables, while other dimensions may be agreed in the purchase agreement.

This matters because casing and tubing must run, fit and be handled without damage or excessive variation. Drift and straightness checks help confirm that the product can be installed and used as intended.

Inspection, testing, NDE and PMI

Clause 9 defines the inspection and test system. Test type and frequency are given in the annex tables, and the clause covers chemical analysis, tensile testing, hardness testing, impact testing, flattening, pitting corrosion testing for group 2, microstructural examination, dimensional testing, drift testing, length, straightness, mass, visual inspection and non-destructive examination (NDE).

A key feature is positive material identification (PMI): all group 2 and group 3 lengths shall be PMI tested, and group 1 may be tested by agreement. The clause also requires 100 % coverage for full-body NDE of applicable products and sets qualification expectations for NDE personnel and procedures.

For buyers, this clause is the proof-of-conformance layer. For manufacturers, it defines the checks, records and reference methods needed before shipment.

Surface, marking, documents and facilities

Clauses 10 to 15 control how the product is finished, identified, documented and handled. Group 1 pipes are delivered with their internal surface pickled or grit blasted, while groups 2 and 3 require clean internal and external surfaces. Marking uses colour coding and paint or ink stencilling, with PSL-2 identified by L2 or L2A where agreed.

The document also requires suitable handling, packaging and storage, record retention, test certificates, and minimum facility capability for pipe mills, bar mills, processors and coupling or pup-joint manufacturers. These provisions matter because they protect product condition after testing and make sure subcontracted work remains under the manufacturer’s control.

What terms does prEN ISO 13680 define?

  • CRA - corrosion-resistant alloy, meaning an alloy intended to resist general corrosion, localized corrosion and/or environmental cracking in service environments that attack carbon and low-alloy steels.
  • PSL - product specification level; PSL-1 is the basis of the document, while PSL-2 adds extra requirements for corrosion and cracking resistance.
  • CH - cold-hardened, meaning the required mechanical properties are obtained by cold finishing without subsequent heat treatment.
  • SA - solution-annealed, meaning the material has been solution treated to obtain the required metallurgical condition.
  • QT - quenched and tempered, meaning the product has been heat treated after hot forming to achieve the specified properties.
  • MPQT - manufacturing procedure qualification test, the qualification program used for a product range or a process change.
  • PMI - positive material identification, a method used to confirm that the tested length matches the specified material category.
  • PREN - pitting-resistance equivalent number, a composition-based indicator used for group 2 material.

Who uses prEN ISO 13680?

prEN ISO 13680 is used by manufacturers, purchasers, quality teams and inspectors involved in oil and gas tubular products and related accessory material. It is also used by pipe mills, bar mills, processors, coupling or pup-joint manufacturers and subcontractors that perform heat treatment, inspection, marking or finishing.

In practice, buyers use it to write the purchase agreement, quality managers use it to set acceptance and traceability rules, and production and laboratory staff use it to qualify the route, test the product and compile the certificates. NDE and PMI personnel use it for inspection procedures and acceptance decisions.

What changed in prEN ISO 13680 from the previous edition?

Compared with ISO 13680:2024, this draft consolidates former groups 3 and 4 into the current group 3 and removes group 4. The note in the scope also states that group 5 remains unchanged to avoid confusion with earlier editions.

Which standards are used with prEN ISO 13680?

  • ISO 377 - sampling and preparation of test pieces for mechanical testing
  • ISO 404 - general technical delivery requirements for steel products
  • ISO 4885 - heat-treatment vocabulary used in the terminology section
  • ISO 4948-1 and ISO 4948-2 - steel classification used in the CRA definition
  • ISO 6508-1 and ISO 6508-2 - Rockwell hardness testing and machine verification
  • ISO 6892-1 and ISO 6892-2 - tensile testing at room and elevated temperature
  • ISO 8501-1 - visual cleanliness grading for grit blasting of group 1 pipes
  • ISO 9712 - qualification and certification of NDT personnel
  • ISO 15156 series / NACE MR0175 - the cracking-resistant service environment basis for PSL-2
  • ASTM G48, Method A - pitting corrosion testing for group 2
  • ASTM E1476 or API RP 578 - methods for PMI
  • ASTM A380 - guidance for cleaning, descaling and passivation
  • ISO 17781 and NORSOK M-650 - referenced in MPQT and manufacturing qualification context
  • API Standard 6ACRA - referenced for group 5 marking and alloy or grade addition context

What does the prEN ISO 13680 document contain?

prEN ISO 13680 contains SI and USC tables for chemical composition, mechanical properties, tolerances, test frequencies, colour coding and product-specific acceptance criteria. It also contains formulas for impact and flattening requirements, and conversion procedures for unit systems.

The figures show straightness checks, impact specimen orientation, hardness indentation layout, colour-band position and NDE reference indicators. Annex I provides microstructure photo examples for groups 1, 2 and 3, which helps inspectors compare real microstructures with acceptable and unacceptable patterns.

The document also contains detailed test methods and acceptance criteria for chemistry, tensile testing, hardness, Charpy impact, flattening, pitting corrosion, microstructure, dimensional checks, drift, straightness, mass, visual inspection, NDE and PMI. In practice, it is a supply, inspection and certification standard for qualified seamless CRA products used in well and tubular applications.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent
rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a)
patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that

Oil and gas industries including lower carbon energy —
Corrosion-resistant alloy seamless products for use as casing,
tubing, coupling stock and accessory material — Technical
delivery conditions
WARNING — It is the purchaser's responsibility to specify the product specification level (PSL),
corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) group, category, grade, delivery conditions and any other requirement
in addition to those specified herewith to ensure that the product is adequate for the intended
service environment. The NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 series should be applied when making specific
requirements for H S-containing environments; see Annex G. It is the product user's responsibility
to ensure that the product is suitable for the intended application with respect to all environmental
degradation threats during both normal operation and system upsets. Not all PSL-1 categories and
grades can be made cracking resistant in accordance with the NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 series and
are, therefore, not included in PSL-2.
1 Scope
This document specifies the technical delivery conditions for corrosion-resistant alloy seamless products
for casing, tubing, coupling stock and accessory material (including coupling stock and accessory material
from bar) for two product specification levels:
— PSL-1, which is the basis of this document;
— PSL-2, which provides additional requirements for a product that is intended to be both corrosion and
cracking resistant for the environments and qualification method specified in Annex G and in the NACE
MR0175/ISO 15156 series.
This document contains no provisions relating to the connection of individual lengths of pipe, except what is
included in Annex J. Demonstration of conformance to NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 series of material affected
by end sizing, connection manufacture or welding operations is outside the scope of this document.
This document is applicable to the following four groups of products:
