General Information
Overview
EN 14278-1:2004 is a CEN European Standard that specifies a manual thermodetection method for the determination of cotton fibre stickiness. Published in 2004, the method simulates the tendency of cotton fibres to adhere to textile working surfaces during processing. Test specimens may be raw cotton (e.g., bale samples), opened fibre, slivers or comparable preparations. Results indicate the incidence of sticky points but do not investigate the origins of stickiness or directly measure sugar content.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Principle: a fibre web of fixed surface area and mass is sandwiched between two aluminium foils and exposed to sequential heat and pressure to reveal sticky points, which are then counted.
- Apparatus:
- Manual thermodetection device with a copper-plated aluminium platen and a heating plate (heating plate dimension specified).
- Electromechanical opener and accessories to prepare a uniform fibre web (specified widths, cylinder speeds and teeth density).
- Aluminium foil: matt surface, thickness ~15 ± 5 µm (or mass ~40 ± 13.5 g/m²).
- Remover/cleaner (non-woven cover,
400 ± 20 g) and light source (110 ± 10 W, oblique illumination). - Fan to vibrate adhering fibres.
- Test conditions:
- Conditioning and testing atmosphere as per EN 20139 (standard atmospheres for textiles).
- Heating phase: 84 ± 4 °C, pressure ~780 ± 50 N, duration 12 ± 2 s.
- Ambient compression: pressure ~590 ± 50 N for 120 ± 10 s.
- Rest: ensemble allowed to rest ≥ 60 ± 5 min before counting.
- Specimen preparation:
- Fibre web dimensions ~540 ± 20 mm × 160 ± 20 mm or target mass ~29.5 ± 4 g/m²; specimen mass 2.5 ± 0.05 g for trio of tests.
- Results:
- Count sticky points on both foils, average across three specimens. Annex A describes statistical treatment (distribution often Poisson/negative binomial; square-root transform recommended for variance stabilization).
Applications
- Routine quality control and acceptance testing of cotton bales and opened fibre.
- Process troubleshooting where fibre stickiness affects spinning, carding or other textile operations.
- Comparative testing in supply chain management to screen lots before processing.
- Research and interlaboratory studies on stickiness measurement methods.
Who uses this standard
- Textile testing laboratories and quality assurance teams
- Spinning mills, carding and opening facilities
- Cotton traders, ginneries and bale sampling services
- Standards bodies and researchers involved in textile material characterization

This standard consists of the following methods, under the general title "Textiles - Determination of cotton fibre stickiness": • Part 1: Method using a manual thermodetection device • Part 2: Method using an automatic thermodetection plate device • Part 3: Method using an automatic rotating drum device SIST EN 14278-1:2004
3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this European Standard, the following terms and definitions apply. 3.1 stickiness level number of sticky points indicating the incidence of cotton fibre
stickiness 3.2 thermodetection action of revealing sticky points through the combined application of heat and pressure 3.3 sticky points entanglement of fibres or individual fibres that are attached to a working surface as a result of the inherent stickiness of the cotton 3.4 ensemble upper and lower aluminium foils enclosing a fibre sample 3.5 remover device to take away the non sticking fibres from the counting surface 4 Principle A fibre web, whose surface area and mass are fixed, is placed between two sheets of aluminium foil and pressed at two pressure levels applied successively at different temperature settings to reveal sticky points. The sticky points are then counted to evaluate the level of stickiness. SIST EN 14278-1:2004
NOTE The test method has been developed from practice where values of the major parameters (i.e. applied forces, surface area, temperature and time) have been fixed. Deviation from these va
