Overview
EN 772-5:2016 - Methods of test for masonry units, Part 5 - specifies a standardized laboratory procedure to determine the active soluble salts content of clay masonry units. Published by CEN in March 2016 (superseding EN 772-5:2001), this European Standard defines sampling, sample preparation, water extraction and analytical determination of the soluble magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na) and potassium (K) ions released from fired clay (terracotta) units under test conditions. These ions are classed as “active” salts in EN 771‑1 and can be correlated with potential deleterious effects on cementitious mortars or the units themselves.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: Quantify active soluble salts in clay masonry units to assess potential salt-related damage.
- Sampling: Minimum of six whole units (or more if product spec requires) with care to avoid prior leaching.
- Sample preparation:
- Produce representative subsample (50–250 g) ground to pass a 150 µm test sieve.
- Crushing stages: lumps ≤10 mm, then ≤1 mm, drying to constant mass at (105 ± 5) °C, final grinding to 95% passing 150 µm.
- Extraction procedure:
- Weigh 20.00 g ± 0.05 g of prepared sample and add 200 ml distilled/deionized water.
- Shake for 60 min (horizontal shaker or rotary shaker as specified).
- Filter (or centrifuge) within 15 min; filtrate must be clear.
- Analytical methods:
- Instrumental: Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Flame Photometry, or Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectrometry (sample prep and calibration procedures provided).
- Alternative: EDTA titration for magnesium, with procedures for Na/K determination also included.
- Calculation and reporting: Calibration-based quantification, expression of results as percentage of original mass, and required test-report content.
Practical applications
- Quality control and factory production testing of clay masonry units (bricks, terracotta).
- Pre-specification testing to limit salt-related durability issues in masonry construction.
- Forensic and failure analysis where efflorescence, mortar-adhesion loss, or salt crystallization is suspected.
- Regulatory or certification testing where compliance with EN product standards is required.

3 Principle
The method adopted is based on water extraction from a crushed representative sample of the clay
masonry units, and determines the amounts of soluble magnesium, sodium and potassium ions,
released under the test conditions, which may be correlated with the potentially damaging effect of
salts of those ions on cementitious mortars in certain circumstances, or even on the units themselves.
These salts are known as «active» soluble salts in EN 771-1.

The standard EN 772-5:2016 provides a comprehensive framework for assessing the active soluble salts content in clay masonry units, which is crucial for ensuring the longevity and performance of masonry structures. This document is essential for construction professionals, as excessive soluble salts can lead to efflorescence and deterioration of masonry materials, adversely affecting both aesthetic and structural aspects. One of the significant strengths of the EN 772-5:2016 standard is its clarity in methodology, which allows for consistent testing across various laboratories and projects. By providing a standardized approach, it enhances the reliability of results, thereby facilitating better comparison and analysis of materials. The inclusion of detailed procedures ensures that practitioners can accurately assess the soluble salts content, which is particularly relevant in areas where clay masonry units are prevalent. Furthermore, the standard’s emphasis on the determination of the active soluble salts content underscores its importance in the industry. The inclusion of guidelines that relate directly to building performance aids architects, engineers, and contractors in making informed material selections, potentially preventing costly repairs in the future. EN 772-5:2016 is also timely and relevant in the context of increasing environmental regulations and sustainability considerations in construction practices. Understanding the chemical properties of clay masonry units helps in promoting best practices that align with environmental standards and contribute to more sustainable building processes. In conclusion, EN 772-5:2016 serves as a vital tool for the construction industry, ensuring that the quality of clay masonry units meets both functional and aesthetic requirements while addressing the challenges posed by soluble salts. Its comprehensive and standardized approach makes it an invaluable resource for professionals seeking to enhance the durability and performance of masonry works.
