Bituminous mixtures - Test methods - Part 53: Cohesion increase by spreadability-meter method
This document specifies a method to measure the spreadability characteristics of bituminous mixtures which are able to vary with time. It can be used for the determination of the delay between manufacturing and laying. It is intended to be assistance for bituminous mixtures design rather than a type test.
This document applies to bituminous mixtures both those made up in laboratory and those resulting from work site sampling, with an upper aggregate size not larger than 31,5 mm. It is not applicable to mastic asphalt.

Overview
EN 12697-53:2019 - "Bituminous mixtures - Test methods - Part 53: Cohesion increase by spreadability‑meter method" (CEN) defines a laboratory and site sampling test to measure the spreadability and cohesion increase of bituminous mixtures over time. The method uses a spreadability‑meter to record shear resistance as a piston advances through a filled mould, providing a practical indicator of how a mixture’s workability evolves and helping determine the allowable delay between manufacturing and laying. This standard is intended as a design and mix‑evaluation aid rather than a pass/fail type test. It does not apply to mastic asphalt and is for mixtures with an upper aggregate size ≤ 31.5 mm.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Principle: Measure the maximal shear force (Fmax) developed by a piston‑driven stainless steel plate moving through a prepared bituminous sample; cohesion increase is inferred from rising shear force over curing time.
- Scope: Applies to laboratory mixes and work site samples (aggregate max 31.5 mm); not for mastic asphalt.
- Apparatus:
- Moulds: large (L 220 × W 300 × H 100 mm) or small (L 220 × W 150 × H 100 mm).
- Spreadability‑meter: piston speed (10.0 ± 0.5 mm/s); force sensor accuracy specified (±1 N up to 100 N, ±1 % above 100 N); stainless steel plate geometry and initial gap detailed.
- Optional filling shoot and discharge box for reproducible sample filling.
- Climatic chamber or oven to control curing temperature and hygrometry.
- Procedure:
- Prepare multiple moulds for different curing times; at least two valid tests per curing time (results must not differ by more than 15%).
- Strike off to (100 ± 2) mm thickness without compacting; condition samples; measure shear force within 2 minutes of removal from chamber.
- Express results as average Fmax for each curing time and optionally plot cohesion evolution curves.
- Reporting: Test method reference, sample ID, mix type and formula, moisture and density method, curing conditions, mould size and filling procedure, test temperature, Fmax per curing time and other required details.
- Precision: Not determined in this part.
Applications
- Evaluate workability and handling window (delay between manufacture and laying) for asphalt production and paving operations.
- Support mix design and optimization by tracking cohesion development (especially for mixes that change properties over time).
- Quality control for asphalt plants and on‑site sampling to inform paving schedules.
- Research into curing kinetics and spreadability of novel binders or additives.
Who uses this standard
- Pavement engineers and mix designers
- Asphalt plant QC laboratories
- Construction contractors and site supervisors
- Research institutions studying bituminous mixture behavior

The cohesion increase test consists of measuring of the resistance against the shear due to the progress
of a piston in a mould filled with the bituminous mixture to be tested (Figure 1). The cohe
