Tests for geometrical properties of aggregates - Part 10: Assessment of fines - Grading of filler aggregates (air jet sieving)
This European Standard describes the reference method used for type testing and in cases of dispute for determining the particle size distribution up to 2 mm size of natural or manufactured origin filler aggregate using air jet sieving. For other purposes, in particular factory production control, other methods may be used provided that an appropriate working relationship with the reference method has been established.
NOTE A wet sieving procedure conforming to EN 933-1 can be used as an alternative method. However, this procedure is not applicable for mixed filler.

Overview
EN 933-10:2009, developed by CEN, defines the reference method for assessing fines and grading filler aggregates using air jet sieving. This European Standard specifies procedures for determining the particle size distribution of natural or manufactured filler aggregates up to 2 mm. It is the reference procedure for type testing and dispute resolution in aggregate grading for construction materials. While alternative approaches like wet sieving (EN 933-1) exist, the air jet sieving method is particularly effective for dry fillers and is required where accuracy and consistency are essential.
Key Topics
- Scope and Application: Applicable to both natural and manufactured filler aggregates, focusing on particles mostly passing a 0.063 mm sieve.
- Testing Method: Air jet sieving is used as the principal method, providing accurate separation by particle size without agglomeration or electrostatic effects.
- Essential Apparatus:
- Air jet sieving apparatus with a controlled pressure difference
- Set of sieves with standard aperture sizes (2 mm, 0.125 mm, 0.063 mm)
- Calibrated balances, ventilated oven, soft brush, and necessary lab tools
- Sample Preparation: Test portions are prepared from laboratory samples, ensuring representative material and consistent mass for testing.
- Procedure Outline:
- Drying and weighing of sample
- Sequential sieving through prescribed mesh sizes using air jet technique
- Calculation of mass retained and percentage passing for each sieve
- Reporting: Results must include reference to the standard, identification details, percentage passing each sieve, and relevant test conditions.
Applications
The EN 933-10:2009 standard is widely used in the construction and mineral materials industries to ensure the quality and consistency of filler aggregates. Key applications include:
- Type Testing: Essential in qualifying filler aggregates for use in construction products where specific grading is required.
- Quality Control in Production: Provides manufacturers and testing laboratories with a reliable method to monitor aggregate consistency, ensuring compliance with specification limits.
- Dispute Resolution: Serves as the reference test in resolving discrepancies about aggregate grading.
- Road and Concrete Materials: Used in the production of asphalt mixtures, concrete, and mortars where the fines content and gradation affect workability, strength, and durability.
- Product Certification and Compliance: Supports compliance with European Standards in construction material supply chains.
Related Standards
EN 933-10:2009 is part of a comprehensive series on aggregate testing. Key related standards include:
- EN 933-1: Determination of particle size distribution - Sieving method (suitable for wet procedure)
- EN 932-2: Methods for reducing laboratory samples
- EN 932-5: Equipment and calibration requirements
- EN 933-2: Test sieves, specification of nominal apertures
- EN 933-8: Sand equivalent test for fines assessment
- EN 933-9: Methylene blue test for fines
- EN 13179: Tests for filler aggregate used in bituminous mixtures
By adopting EN 933-10:2009, organizations contribute to uniform testing methodologies, improve the reliability of construction materials, and ensure compliance with European regulations and quality standards.
