Overview
EN 13451-5:2014 is the CEN standard that sets additional specific safety requirements and test methods for lane lines and dividing line used in swimming pools. It complements and takes priority over the general requirements in EN 13451-1:2011 and applies to manufactured lane lines for competition and training and dividing line assemblies for classified pools (see EN 15288-1 and EN 15288-2).
This part covers design, structural integrity, tensioning and safety links, buoyancy and anti‑entrapment provisions, plus test methods and marking requirements.
Key Topics
- Design and continuity: Lane lines must extend the full length of a lane; floats, when used, must form an unbroken series without gaps.
- Structural integrity: Lane lines, fixings and tensioning devices shall withstand a tensile force of 15 kN.
- Tensioning device: A device must maintain straight position after mounting; self‑loosening designs are not acceptable.
- Safety link: A safety link is required on each lane line and shall be designed to break at (7,5 ± 1,2) kN.
- Entrapment and crushing: Variable openings must meet EN 13451-1 requirements; floats need continuity devices (e.g., springs) and parallel front float surfaces should be avoided.
- Buoyancy: Lane lines must provide positive buoyancy so that about one half to two thirds of float height projects above the water surface.
Dividing line specific requirements:
- Forms: plastic rope; coated steel wire rope; coated steel wire rope with floats/markers; semi-rigid hose.
- Dimensions & strength: Dividing ropes must be ≥20 mm thick (excluding floats), breaking force ≥20 000 N, elongation ≤2.5‰.
- Floats and markers: Floats or ball markers must have diameter ≥80 mm; wire ropes require coating thickness ≥1 mm.
- Rope holders & tensioning: Rope holders must resist 20 000 N parallel load without permanent deformation; turnbuckle openings ≤8 mm.
Applications
This standard is practical for:
- Manufacturers designing lane lines, dividing lines, tensioning devices and fittings to meet European safety expectations.
- Pool operators and facility managers who must select, install and maintain lane lines and dividing lines for competition, training and classified pools.
- Test laboratories and certifiers verifying tensile, elongation and buoyancy characteristics using referenced test methods.
Key benefits include improved swimmer safety through reduced entrapment/crush hazards, consistent buoyancy and verified mechanical strength for competition and operational use.
Related Standards

- EN ISO 2307 - Test methods for fibre ropes.
- EN 15288-1 / EN 15288-2 - Safety requirements for pool design and operation (scope linkage).

Practical note: Manufacturers may reference EN 13451-5:2014 when marking products to demonstrate compliance; operators should verify that installed lane lines and dividing lines meet the tensile, buoyancy and anti‑entrapment criteria specified.
