Overview
EN 878:2016 is the CEN (European) standard for aluminium sulfate used in the treatment of water intended for human consumption. Approved in January 2016 and superseding EN 878:2004, it defines the chemical identity, physical and chemical characteristics, purity criteria and reference analytical methods for aluminium sulfate as a water treatment chemical. The standard also provides practical information on use in water treatment and sets out rules for safe handling and labelling (see Annex B).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and identification
- Chemical name, synonyms (aluminium sulfate, cake alum, alum), empirical and chemical formulas and relative molecular mass (Al2(SO4)3, M = 342.14).
- CAS numbers for common hydrates (e.g., Al2(SO4)3 · 14 H2O: 16828-12-9; anhydrous: 10043-01-3).
- Commercial forms and appearance
- Solid hydrated forms (slabs, kibbled, ground, granulated) and aqueous solutions.
- Typical appearance: white solid or colourless to yellow clear liquid.
- Physical data included
- Solution density examples (at 15 °C) for typical active-matter concentrations (e.g., densities ~1.310–1.335 g/ml for Al ≈ 40.8–45.0 g/kg).
- Solubility limits and practical considerations for dissolution.
- Purity and analytical methods
- Requirements for composition, impurities and chemical parameters.
- Normative reference to analytical methods (notably EN 1302 for aluminium-based coagulants).
- Sampling and testing
- Sampling guidance for solids and liquids with references to ISO sampling standards.
- Labelling, transport and storage
- Labelling requirements following EU Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP), transport regulations and storage compatibility and stability.
- Safety and emergency procedures
- Annex B (normative) covers rules for safe handling, first aid, spillage response and fire measures.
