Overview

EN ISO 13337:2009 provides the international standard specification for spring-type straight pins - slotted, light duty. These pins are made from steel, austenitic stainless steel, or martensitic stainless steel, and cover nominal diameters from 2 mm up to 50 mm inclusive. Developed by ISO/TC 2 and endorsed by CEN, this standard supersedes the earlier 1997 edition to offer updated technical and dimensional requirements. It is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and users involved in fastener components, ensuring consistent quality, interchangeability, and performance across industries.

Key Topics

  • Pin Materials
The standard stipulates the use of steel, austenitic stainless steel, or martensitic stainless steel, detailing chemical composition limits and hardness requirements. Heat treatments such as hardening and tempering ensure durability and shear strength.

  • Dimensional Specifications
Covers nominal diameters (2 mm to 50 mm), lengths, and slot dimensions required for light-duty spring pins. Tolerances are defined according to the hole tolerances (H12 class) to ensure proper fitting without the slot fully closing upon installation.

  • Mechanical Properties
Includes minimum double shear strength values for steel and martensitic stainless pins. Austenitic stainless steel pins do not have specified shear strength values.

  • Surface Finishes and Coatings
The standard advises against certain coatings like electroplating or phosphate-coating without proper baking processes to mitigate hydrogen embrittlement. Alternative corrosion protection methods may be applied as agreed between the customer and supplier.

  • Testing and Acceptance
Hardness tests must comply with ISO 6507-1; shear strength is tested as per ISO 8749. Acceptance inspection follows ISO 3269 guidelines. The workmanship requires pins to be free from defects and burrs.

  • Designation System
Provides examples for marking pins based on diameter, length, type (standard or non-interlocking), and material, facilitating clear identification and specification communication.

Applications

EN ISO 13337:2009 standard spring-type straight pins are widely used for:

  • Mechanical Assembly and Fastening
Ideal for securing components requiring light-duty positioning and retaining, such as in machinery, automotive parts, and appliances.

  • Precision Engineering
Utilized where reliable spring action and alignment are critical, especially in tooling, fixtures, and precision instruments.

  • Corrosion-Resistant Environments
Austenitic and martensitic stainless steel pins conforming to this standard are suitable for applications exposed to moisture or corrosive agents, including marine and food processing equipment.

  • Interchangeable Components
Standardized dimensions and material specifications allow for seamless interchangeability across manufacturers and suppliers, reducing downtimes and facilitating maintenance.

Related Standards

  • ISO 8752: For spring-type straight pins - slotted, heavy duty, complementing the specifications for more robust applications.

  • ISO 3269: Fasteners - Acceptance inspection, which outlines acceptance procedures applicable to pins defined under this standard.

  • ISO 4042: Fasteners - Electroplated coatings, providing guidance on surface treatments and limitations, relevant for corrosion protection measures in spring pins.

  • ISO 6507-1: Metallic materials - Vickers hardness test, specifying the hardness test methods referenced in pin qualification.

  • ISO 8749: Pins and grooved pins - Shear test, defining the shear strength testing method for pins under light-duty conditions.

The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization. International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2. The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
