Fasteners - Grooved pins - One-third-length center grooves (ISO 8742:2026)

This document specifies the characteristics of grooved pins with one-third-length centre oval grooves (with closed ends), in steel and stainless steel, and with a nominal diameter from 1 mm to 25 mm.
These grooved pins are designed to fulfil the main following functions:
relative rotation of the assembled parts, and
positioning or guiding,
with an easy installation (due to its symmetrical shape) and a medium level of pull-out resistance (due to the elastic fit behaviour of the pin).
The general requirements (including functional principles for grooved pins and assembly) are specified in ISO 13669.

Overview

EN ISO 8742:2026, published by CEN, specifies the characteristics and requirements for grooved pins featuring one-third-length center oval grooves with closed ends. These fasteners are manufactured in steel and stainless steel, suitable for nominal diameters from 1 mm to 25 mm. The standard ensures that grooved pins are designed to allow for the relative rotation of assembled parts, precise positioning or guiding, and efficient installation due to their symmetrical shape. Medium pull-out resistance is achieved through the elastic fit behavior inherent to the pin’s design. General principles and assembly requirements are further detailed in ISO 13669.

Key Topics

  • Product Scope: Covers grooved pins with one-third-length center grooves, catering to a diverse range of nominal diameters and material grades, including steel and multiple grades of stainless steel (A2, A4, C1, F1).
  • Functional Performance: Designed for:
    • Facilitating relative rotation between assembled components
    • Positioning and guiding applications where precise alignment is critical
    • Ensuring moderate resistance to removal due to the elastic interference fit
  • Design Attributes:
    • Symmetrical and closed-ended grooves allow for easy, bi-directional installation
    • Standardized options for rounded or chamfered ends based on application needs
  • Dimensions and Tolerances: Strictly defined for consistency in performance and interchangeability across various industrial uses. The standard includes detailed tolerances for grooving and pin straightness.
  • Surface Condition and Marking: Outlines acceptable finishing processes, including electroplated coatings, passivation, and labeling on packaging for clear identification and traceability.

Applications

Grooved pins specified under EN ISO 8742:2026 are widely used in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and assembly operations where reliable alignment and rotational movement are required. Typical applications include:

  • Automotive assemblies: Used as locating and guiding pins in gearboxes, axles, and subassemblies.
  • Machinery and equipment: For precise positioning of parts, hinges, levers, and articulated systems.
  • Fixtures and jigs: Serve as robust reference points in manufacturing tooling.
  • Appliances and consumer goods: Where parts require alignment but occasional disassembly or rotation is necessary.
  • Electronics and electrical devices: In assemblies where non-permanent, yet secure, connections are preferred.

The standard’s medium pull-out resistance is ideal for situations where pins need to resist moderate axial forces but can be conveniently installed or replaced without specialized equipment.

Related Standards

The following international standards provide complementary or alternative specifications for grooved pins and associated fasteners:

  • ISO 13669: General requirements and functional principles for grooved pins and their assembly.
  • ISO 13670: Reverse-taper grooved pins - one quarter-length progressive grooves.
  • ISO 8739, ISO 8740, ISO 8741, ISO 8743 - ISO 8747: Cover various designs of grooved pins, including full-length and half-length grooves, different head styles, and other geometries.
  • ISO 3506-6: Mechanical properties of corrosion-resistant stainless steel fasteners.
  • ISO 4042, ISO 10683, ISO 9717: Standards for coatings and surface treatments.
  • ISO 3269: Acceptance inspection for fastener quality assurance.
  • ISO 1891-4: Vocabulary and protocols for control, inspection, and identification of fasteners.
  • ISO 16048: Passivation of stainless-steel fasteners.

Practical Value

EN ISO 8742:2026 helps manufacturers, engineers, and quality professionals ensure the interchangeability, functional performance, and traceability of grooved pins within a global supply chain. Adhering to this standard simplifies procurement, enhances assembly reliability, and reduces the risk of misalignment or premature wear in critical applications. The use of harmonized dimensions and tolerances also supports cost-effective manufacturing and streamlined maintenance across industries.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent
rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a)
patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 2, Fasteners, in collaboration with the
European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 185 Fasteners, in accordance
with the Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 8742:1997) which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— terms and definitions, principles for grooved pins and assembly (including hole dimensions), control of
the expanded diameter d and pin straightness, mechanical and physical properties (including shear
resistance and hardness) and inspection which are common for all grooved pins (product standards
ISO 8739 to ISO 8747, ISO 13670 and ISO 13672) have been specified in the new reference standard
ISO 13669, general requirements;
— non-preferred diameters 1 mm, 3,5 mm, 7 mm, 9 mm, 14 mm and 18 mm have been added;
— values of expanded diameter d for steel pins have been slightly increased for the shortest length range,
and have been added for stainless steel pins;
— tolerances for the rounded end and values for the chamfered end have been added;
— tolerances for the length of the grooves and their location have been added;
— stainless steel grades A2, A4, C1 and F1 have been added;
— other materials (such as hardened steels, brass, aluminium) are by agreement (see Table 3);
— specifications for labelling have been added as Clause 8.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user's national standards body. A
complete listing of these bodies can be found at www.iso.org/members.html.
