Overview

EN ISO 20768:2021/A1:2025 is an important European standard published by CEN, focusing on vapour products-specifically the routine analytical vaping machines used for product testing. This amendment updates the existing EN ISO 20768:2021 standard by correcting critical requirements related to puff profiles during vaping machine operation. Approved in June 2025, this standard harmonizes testing conditions for vaping devices to ensure consistent and repeatable analytical results.

The amendment provides refined definitions and standardizes the puff profile parameters such as puff frequency and average flow rate, reflecting the latest industry requirements. These corrections enhance the accuracy of routine measurements applicable to vapour product analysis, supporting manufacturers, regulators, and testing laboratories.

Key Topics

  • Puff Profile Correction: Adjustments to the puff frequency and puff flow rate ensure that machine testing better resembles typical human usage patterns.
  • Puff Frequency: Defined as the interval between the start of one puff and the start of the next, standardized at one puff every 30 seconds ± 0.5 seconds.
  • Flow Rate Specifications: The average flow rate during a puff is specified as 18.3 ml/s ± 1.8 ml/s, providing clearer criteria for device testing setups.
  • Definitions and Conditions: Precise terminology for vapour product testing machinery is established, promoting uniformity across manufacturers and testing centers.
  • Multi-language Availability: Provided officially in English, French, and German with provisions for national translations by CEN members.

Applications

This amendment is critical for stakeholders involved with vapour product quality control and compliance, including:

  • Vapour Product Manufacturers: Employ this standard to test and validate device performance consistently before market release.
  • Testing Laboratories: Use standardized puff profiles and flow rates to conduct repeatable and comparable analyses of vaping emissions.
  • Regulatory Authorities: Reference the standard to assess product safety and compliance with regional and international vaping regulations.
  • Research and Development: Apply the standardized conditions during device innovation and formulation of e-liquids for reproducible data.
  • Quality Assurance Teams: Integrate into quality systems to monitor batch consistency and device durability.

By adopting the corrected puff profile requirements, professionals can reduce variability in testing outcomes and improve reliability of emissions data across the industry.

Related Standards

  • ISO 20768:2018 – The original international standard specifying routine analytical vaping machine definitions and conditions.
  • EN ISO 20768:2021 – The preceding European version harmonizing ISO 20768 with regional regulations.
  • ISO/TC 126 Standards – Broader collection of tobacco and related product standards covering testing and terminology.
  • CEN/TC 437 Standards – European standards addressing electronic cigarettes and e-liquids, complementing machine testing protocols.

Utilizing EN ISO 20768:2021/A1:2025 alongside related vapor product standards helps ensure comprehensive compliance and harmonized testing methodologies in the rapidly evolving vaping sector.
