Overview

EN 15057:2006 (CEN) specifies a soft body impact test method for fibre‑cement profiled sheets used in roofing. The standard applies to sheets that conform to EN 494 and are at least 1,040 mm long, tested “as delivered”. The procedure evaluates the ability of a sheet assembly to arrest and retain a falling soft body - a pragmatic measure of resistance to accidental impacts during construction or in service.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: a 50 kg spheroconical bag (filled with glass spheres) is dropped vertically with no initial speed onto the mid‑sheet at mid‑span. Drop height is 1,200 mm (nominal), producing the impact energy E = g × m × h.
  • Test assembly: steel frame (IPN/IPE profiles) with defined minimum dimensions and support spacings; sheets fixed using specified hooks and washers; one impact per sheet length.
  • Specimens and sampling:
    • Type test nature - required for product approval and repeated at least yearly for continuous production.
    • Sample size: draw full‑size sheets (16 or 24) from a consignment of ≥151 sheets; tests are performed on sets of 8 sheets (8 impacts).
    • If 1 of 8 fails, retest with another 8 sheets; compliance requires 8/8 passing.
  • Acceptance criteria: the impacted sheet must arrest the fall and retain the impactor on the assembly for at least 60 seconds.
  • Moisture condition: tested specimens must have average moisture content 8–16%; moisture determined by oven drying at 105 °C (24 h).
  • Test report must reference EN 15057, include lab name, test date, sheet identification (per EN 494), moisture content, span, drop height and pass/fail results.

Practical applications and users

  • Manufacturers - product development, design verification, and routine type testing to demonstrate conformity.
  • Testing laboratories - implement the specified apparatus, sampling and reporting procedures.
  • Specifiers, architects and roofing contractors - use test results to select impact‑resistant fibre‑cement profiled sheets for installations and refurbishment work.
  • Regulators and certification bodies - adopt the method (or its variations) when defining national classifications or durability requirements for roofing assemblies.
  • Procurement teams - verify delivered products “as delivered” meet contractual impact resistance expectations.
