EN ISO 2286-1:2016 specifies standardized methods for determining the roll characteristics of rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics. Part 1 covers objective procedures to measure the length, width (usable width) and net mass of a roll so that suppliers, purchasers and test laboratories can report consistent, comparable values for coated textile products.

• Scope and intent: Methods apply to rolls of rubber- or plastics-coated textile fabrics; users must record ambient temperature and relative humidity at time of test.
• Length measurement (reference method):
  • A flat measuring table (minimum 5 m long) with longitudinal markings is used to unroll the fabric in successive sections.
  • The roll start is squared and aligned at zero; each unrolled section is marked, measured and re‑rolled until the roll end.
  • Alternative mechanical, electromechanical or photoelectric length-measuring systems are permitted when appropriate; note such alternatives may be unsuitable for highly extensible coated fabrics.
  • Total length is measured to the specified resolution (document notes measurement to 100 mm unless otherwise agreed).
• Width (usable width):
  • Measured perpendicular to the roll axis using a ruler or scale.
  • For long rolls: measure at 10 m intervals and report to 5 mm accuracy (unless other agreement).
  • For rolls under 20 m: measure at three positions (near both ends and the middle).
• Net mass:
  • Weigh the empty core/dorn, then the gross mass of the wound roll; subtract to obtain net mass.
  • Balance accuracy requirement: maximum permissible error ±100 g (unless otherwise agreed).
• Test report content: Must include reference to this standard, environmental conditions, full description of the coated fabric, roll length (m, rounded to 0.1 m), measured widths and minimum usable width, net mass (with stated accuracy), measuring equipment used, deviations from procedure and test date.
• Safety note: Users should follow normal laboratory practice; the standard does not address all safety issues.
