Overview

The EN ISO 25745-2:2015/A1:2023 standard is an important amendment to the existing ISO 25745-2:2015 that focuses on the energy performance of lifts (elevators). Published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this amendment introduces provisions relating to express zones, enhancing the energy calculation and classification methods specifically for lifts that include sections without intermediate stoppages. This document plays a critical role in promoting energy efficiency and standardizing energy consumption assessment in vertical transportation systems across Europe and globally.

Key Topics

  • Energy Calculation and Classification for Lifts
This amendment updates the calculation methods for the energy consumption of lifts by incorporating express zones-sections in a lift shaft where the cabin skips intermediate floors, resulting in longer uninterrupted travel distances.

  • Definition of Express Zones
An express zone is defined as a section within the lift well where the distance between two adjacent landings exceeds three average floor distances. This distinction impacts how energy consumption calculations are performed.

  • Revised Travel Distance Formulas
The amendment provides new formulas to calculate average travel distance for lifts with and without express zones:

    • Lifts without express zones use a straightforward calculation based on the percentage of average travel distance and typical reference cycles.
    • Lifts with express zones use a combined calculation factoring in the express zone length, average floor distance, and percentage of trips passing through these zones.
  • Usage Categories and Percentages
Different percentages reflecting average travel distances and the share of trips passing through express zones are specified for various lift usage categories (1–6). This allows more precise and tailored energy performance evaluations based on lift operation intensity.

  • Multiple Express Zones Handling
When a lift features multiple express zones, the amendment directs that these zones be aggregated into a single express zone for the purpose of calculating energy consumption.

  • Updated Terms and Symbols
The amendment adds new symbols and terms relevant to express zones, aiding clarity and consistency in energy performance documentation.

Applications

  • Building Design and Construction
Architects and engineers can utilize this standard when specifying vertical transportation systems in new and refurbished buildings, ensuring energy-efficient lift installations.

  • Lift Manufacturing and System Integration
Manufacturers can apply the revised energy calculation methods to develop and certify lifts that meet contemporary energy performance benchmarks, especially those incorporating express zones for high-rise or specialized buildings.

  • Regulatory Compliance and Certification
Facility managers and building owners can ensure compliance with European and international energy standards, supporting green building certifications and sustainability goals.

  • Energy Performance Assessment and Optimization
The amendment facilitates more accurate energy consumption assessments, guiding maintenance, modernization, and optimization efforts for existing lifts to reduce energy use.

Related Standards

  • ISO 25745-1:2012
General principles for energy calculation and efficiency classification of lifts, escalators, and moving walks.

  • EN ISO 25745-3:2016
Energy performance standard specifically addressing escalators and moving walks.

  • EN 81 Series
