Paper and board - Determination of water absorptiveness - Cobb method (ISO 535:2014)
ISO 535:2014 specifies a method of determining the water absorptiveness of sized paper and board, including corrugated fibreboard, under standard conditions. It may not be suitable for paper of grammage less than 50 g/m2 or embossed paper. It is not suitable for porous papers such as newsprint or unsized papers such as blotting paper or other papers having a relatively high water absorptiveness for which ISO 8787 is more suitable.
This method is not intended to be used for precise evaluation of the writing properties of paper although it does give a general indication of suitability for use with aqueous inks.

Diese Internationale Norm legt ein Verfahren zur Bestimmung des Wasserabsorptionsvermögens von geleimtem Papier und Pappe einschließlich Wellpappe unter Standardbedingungen fest. Es ist möglicherweise nicht geeignet für Papier mit einer flächenbezogenen Masse von weniger als 50 g/m² oder für geprägtes Papier. Es ist ungeeignet für poröses Papier wie Zeitungsdruckpapier oder ungeleimtes Papier wie Löschpapier oder andere Papiere mit einem relativ hohen Wasserabsorptionsvermögen. Hierfür ist ISO 8787 [2] besser geeignet.

L'ISO 535:2014 spécifie une méthode de détermination de la capacité d'absorption d'eau du papier collé et du carton, y compris du carton ondulé, dans des conditions normalisées. Elle peut ne pas convenir au papier de grammage inférieur à 50 g/m2 ou au papier gaufré. Elle n'est applicable ni aux papiers poreux tels que le papier journal, ni aux papiers non collés tels que le papier buvard ou d'autres papiers ayant une capacité d'absorption d'eau relativement élevée, l'ISO 8787 étant mieux adaptée dans ces cas.
Cette méthode n'est pas destinée à l'évaluation précise de l'aptitude du papier à l'écriture, bien qu'elle donne une indication générale de sa compatibilité avec des encres aqueuses.

This document (EN ISO 535:2014) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 6 “Paper, board and
pulps” in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 172 “Pulp, paper and board” the secretariat of
which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical
text or by endorsement, at the latest by August 2014, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at
the latest by August 2014.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
