“Timber structures”, the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This document is currently submitted to the Unique Acceptance Procedure.
This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the
European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Directive(s).
For relationship with EU Directive(s), see informative Annex ZA, which is an integral part of this document.
This amendment introduces a new definition for package in Clause 3 and replaces the provisions in Clause 7
on marking and in ZA.3 on CE marking.
1 Modification to the French title
Replace the second element of the French title with:
"Bois de structure à section rectangulaire classé pour sa résistance".
2 Modification to Clause 3, “Terms and definitions”
Add the following new term and definition:
"3.15
package
timber of one grade, one species or species combination, and one cross section size or of multiple sizes
where the timber is to be used for one structure, graded in one working shift to be delivered to one customer".
3 Modifications to Clause 2, “Normative references”
Add the following references:
"EN 335-1, Durability of wood and wood-based products — Definition of use classes — Part 1: General
EN 335-2, Durability of wood and wood-based products — Definition of use classes — Part 2: Application to
solid wood".
Replace "EN 14081-4:2005" with "EN 14081-4:2009" in Clause 2 and 5.3.3.
Replace "prEN 15228" with "EN 15228" in Clause 2 and 5.4.
Replace "(ISO 3166-1:1997)" with "(ISO 3166-1:2006)".
4 Modifications to Clause 7, “Marking”
Replace the existing 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3, except Table 4, with the following new 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3: "
7.1 General
Two methods for marking exist:
a) Method A (i.e. individual piece marking):
Each piece of graded structural timber shall be clearly and indelibly marked to provide the information
given in 7.2. In addition, the information listed in 7.3 together with those in 7.2 shall be given in a
commercial document, accompanying each package of such timber.
b) Method B (i.e. package marking):
Each package of graded structural timber shall be clearly and indelibly marked with a label attached to
the package to provide the information given in 7.2. In addition, the information listed in 7.3 together with
those in 7.2 shall be given in a commercial document, accompanying each package of such timber.
Visually strength graded structural timber shall be marked according to either Method A or Method B.
NOTE 1 National regulations may exist which limit the method to be used.
Machine strength graded timber shall be marked according to Method A.
NOTE 2 For information on CE marking see ZA.3.2 and ZA.3.3.
7.2 Information either on the timber or on its package
The following information shall be given on the graded structural timber or on the package of such timber:
a) name or identifying mark of the manufacturer;
NOTE 1 Registered address of the manufacturer may also be added.
b) parameters that describe the timber and intended use:
 grade and grading standard, where visually graded;
NOTE 2 This information should be read in conjunction with that given below under c).
 letter “M”, where machine graded;
 words “DRY GRADED” for dry-graded timber, where relevant (see 3.4);
NOTE 3 An alternative wording may be used provided that it relates to the timber dried down to at least the level given
in 3.4 and that it is clearly defined in the commercial document, accompanying the timber.
 identification code number, which identifies product from the accompanying documents;
 specific end use of timber if relevant (see 5.1.4 and 5.2.3);
c) performance of some of the characteristics of the timber, i.e. modulus of elasticity (mean), bending
strength, compressive strength, tensile strength, shear strength, declared by reference to a single
strength class or strength grade:
 for visually graded timber, the strength grade may be assigned to a strength class, see
EN 1912:2004+A4;
 for machine graded timber, the strength class or grade shall be taken from EN 14081-4.
d) letters " PT" where the timber has been treated against biological attack.
NOTE 4 Where ZA.3 covers the same information as this clause, the requirements of this clause are met.
7.3 Information in the documents accompanying either the timber or package of such
timber
The following information, in addition to that specified in 7.2, shall be given in the commercial documents,
accompanying the timber or a package of such timber:
NOTE 1 One accompanying document may contain information on more than one package provided that all relevant
information, applicable to all such packages is given.
a) identification code number, which refers to the relevant products;
b) number of this European Standard, and the year of its publication (i.e. EN 14081-1:2005+A1:2010);
c) description of the timber and its intended use, declared as:
 species code as specified either:
• in Table B.1, in accordance with EN 13556, if single species, or
• in Table 4, if species combination;
 code identifying the country or region of origin in accordance with EN ISO 3166-1, when machine
graded;
d) durability performance (i.e. resistance to biological organisms) of the timber:
 when without preservative treatment (i.e. natural durability): declared as classification against wood
destroying fungi, insects, termites and marine borers, according to EN 350-2, or
 when with preservative treatment in accordance with EN 15228: indication “PT” and declared as “use
class” in accordance with EN 335-1 and EN 335-2, together with type of preservative, critical
retention value and penetration class.
NOTE 2 Where ZA.3 covers the same information as this clause, the requirements of this clause are met.".
5 Modifications to ZA.3, “CE marking”
Replace the existing ZA.3.1 and ZA.3.2 with the following new ZA.3.1, ZA.3.2 and ZA.3.3: "
ZA.3.1 General
The manufacturer or his authorized representative established within the EEA is responsible for the affixing of
the CE marking, which consists of the CE-marking symbol, as given by Directive 93/68/EEC, and the
appropriate accompanying information.
ZA.3.2 Simplified CE marking
The CE-marking symbol and the information followed below, all together representing the simplified CE
marking, shall be given clearly and indelibly either on each piece of graded structural timber (see Method A in
7.1 a) or on a label attached to the package of such timber (see Method B in 7.1 b)):
a) identification number of the notified certification body;

NOTE 2 The above is the year in which the CE marking was first applied by the manufacturer.
d) parameters that describe the timber and intended use, declared as:
 grade and grading standard, where visually graded;
NOTE 3 This information should be read in conjunction with that given below under e).
 letter “M”, where machine graded;
 words “DRY GRADED” of dry-graded timber (see 3.4), where relevant;
NOTE 4 An alternative wording may be used provided that it relates to the timber dried down to at least the level given
in 3.4 and that it is clearly defined in the commercial document, accompanying the timber.
 identification code number, which identifies timber from the accompanying documents;
 letters " PT" where the timber has been treated against biological attack;
e) performances on the following essential characteristics of the timber, listed in Table ZA.1, which are to be
declared and, where relevant, expressed as “Pass” for the pass/fail requirements (where necessary), or
“NPD” for those for characteristics, where this is relevant, namely for:
 modulus of elasticity (mean), bending strength, compressive strength, tensile strength, shear
strength, declared by reference to a single strength class or strength grade:
 for visually graded timber, the strength grade may be assigned to a strength class, see
EN 1912:2004+A4 and for machine graded timber, the strength class or grade shall be taken from
EN 14081-4.
Figure ZA.1 gives an example, in this case for untreated machine graded structural timber, of the simplified
CE-marking either placed on each piece of a graded structural timber (see Method A in 7.1 a) or on a label
attached to the package of such timber (see Method B in 7.1 b).
