Overview

prEN IEC 63086-1:2026, developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and CENELEC (CLC), specifies the general requirements and standardized methods for measuring the performance of household and similar electrical air cleaning appliances. The standard provides a common basis for testing and reporting on the effectiveness, energy efficiency, and other key operating parameters of air cleaners designed for residential and comparable non-industrial environments. By establishing consistent terminology and methodologies, it enhances transparency, comparability, and consumer confidence in air cleaning technologies worldwide.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability

    • The standard applies to electrically powered air cleaning appliances intended for household use, including units powered by AC (up to 250 V single-phase, 480 V three-phase) and DC (up to 48 V) circuits.
    • It does not apply to appliances strictly for industrial, medical, or cooking fume extraction purposes.
  • Terminology and Definitions

    • Clear definitions for key terms such as air cleaner, robotic air cleaner, fresh-air air cleaner, clean air delivery rate (CADR), device under test (DUT), and test chamber.
  • Classification

    • Detailed classification by air cleaning technology (mechanical filtration, electrostatic, adsorption, catalysis, UV-C, plasma, and more) and by placement (floor, table, wall, ceiling, plug-in, vehicle).
  • Measurement Conditions and Test Equipment

    • Requirements for test chamber conditions (temperature, humidity, sealing, mixing fans), instrumentation accuracy, and standardized measurement setups.
    • Ensures that tests are conducted under controlled, repeatable, and reliable conditions.
  • Procedures for Determining Performance

    • Methods for evaluating the air exchange rate using tracer gases.
    • Measuring and calculating the clean air delivery rate (CADR).
    • Assessment of energy efficiency (cleaned air per unit energy).
    • Noise measurement requirements.

Applications

  • Performance Evaluation for Manufacturers

    • Manufacturers can use this standard to verify and declare the effectiveness and energy efficiency of their air purifiers, supporting truthful marketing claims and product labels.
    • Enables consistent performance testing for new product development, benchmarking, and continuous improvements in air cleaner technology.
  • Comparative Product Testing

    • Laboratories and independent testing organizations can apply the specified test procedures for impartial verification, comparative reviews, and quality certification of air cleaning appliances.
  • Consumer Guidance

    • End-users, retailers, and procurement bodies benefit from harmonized test results, enabling informed comparisons between products based on standardized clean air delivery rates, energy consumption, and noise levels.
  • Regulatory and Market Compliance

    • Assists regulatory authorities and market surveillance in verifying compliance with statutory performance and energy efficiency requirements for domestic air cleaners.

Related Standards

  • IEC 62301 – Household electrical appliances, measurement of standby power.
  • IEC 60704-2-19 – Test code for airborne acoustical noise for air cleaners.
  • IEC 61591 – Cooking fume extractors (excluded from this standard’s scope).
  • IEC 63086 series (parts 2 and up) – Expanding coverage to specific test pollutants and further product categories.
