Overview

oSIST prEN IEC 63086-1:2026 outlines the general requirements and standardized methods for measuring the performance of household and similar electrical air cleaning appliances. Developed by SIST and in collaboration with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard is applicable to air cleaners intended for domestic and similar environments, covering manual, automatic, and combination appliances powered by AC or DC. The standard defines critical terms, classifications, general conditions for measurement, and procedures for evaluating performance, energy efficiency, and noise. Its implementation ensures consistency, reliability, and comparability of performance data for air purification products.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability: Defines the range of air cleaning appliances covered, including those powered up to 250 V (single-phase AC), 480 V (three-phase AC), and 48 V (DC). Excludes industrial, medical, and cooking fume extractor devices.
  • Terminology: Provides standardized terms like air cleaner, robotic air cleaner, fresh-air air cleaner, CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate), and device under test (DUT) to ensure uniform understanding across manufacturers and laboratories.
  • Classification: Describes technologies used (mechanical filtration, electrostatic, adsorption, catalysis, UV-C, plasma, ozone, hydroxyl generation) and areas of placement (floor, table, wall, ceiling, direct plug-in, vehicle).
  • Measurement Methods: Details the construction of test chambers, placement of devices, test conditions (temperature, humidity), and requirements for instrumentation (thermometer, hygrometer, power meters, CO2 detector).
  • Performance Evaluation: Specifies protocols for measuring pollutant reduction efficiency, air exchange rates, energy consumption, and noise levels using tracer gas decay, CADR, and maximum performance operation mode.
  • Repeatability and Accuracy: Recommends repeated testing and the use of multiple samples to increase statistical confidence and reproducibility of performance results.
