Overview
prEN 50288-10-1 is a CLC/CENELEC draft sectional specification for multi‑element metallic cables characterized up to 500 MHz, intended for horizontal and building backbone wiring for information technology and generic cabling systems. It was developed to support the European deployment of high‑speed structures such as 10GBase‑T. This part is to be read in conjunction with EN 50288‑1 and references EN 50289 and EN 50290 test-method and material series.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard defines construction, test methods and performance limits for multi‑pair and multi‑quad metallic data cables:
- Cable construction
- Solid copper conductors (plain or metal‑coated), nominal diameter ≥ 0.52 mm and ≤ 0.80 mm.
- Insulation materials referenced to EN 50290‑2‑23; sheath per EN 50290 series.
- Element types: pairs or quads; colour coding per IEC 60189‑2 / IEC 60708‑1.
- Screening: element and core screening rules; braid coverage minima - typically 60% (braid alone) or 30% when used with foil (mechanical coverage).
- Electrical and transmission limits (examples)
- Conductor loop resistance ≤ 19 Ω/100 m; insulation resistance ≥ 500 MΩ·km.
- Characteristic impedance: 100 ± 5 Ω at 100 MHz.
- Propagation delay ≤ 40 ns/100 m at 100 MHz; velocity of propagation limit given as a frequency‑dependent formula.
- Attenuation and crosstalk limits specified up to 500 MHz (numerical tables and formulae for attenuation, NEXT, PSNEXT, ELFEXT, PSELFEXT, return loss).
- Example attenuation bound: α ≤ 1.8√f + 0.01f + 0.2/√f (1–500 MHz).
- Mechanical and environmental tests
- Conductor elongation ≥ 10%, crush and impact resistance, simulated installation bends and tensile loads (e.g., 25 N per pair).
- Temperature cycling and cold bend tests; fire performance per EN 50288‑1.
- Ancillary limits
- Capacitance unbalance ≤ 1 200 pF/km; proposed element voltage/current/temperature ratings in informative Annex A.
Applications and users
Who uses prEN 50288‑10‑1:
- Cable manufacturers designing products for enterprise horizontal and backbone installations.
- System designers and specifiers creating cabling infrastructures for 10GBase‑T and other high‑speed networks.
- Test laboratories and compliance engineers performing transmission, mechanical and environmental verification.
- Building owners, integrators and installers who require verified cable performance up to 500 MHz.
