Overview

EN 60335-2-65:2003/A12:2022 is a CENELEC amendment to the European safety standard that specifies particular requirements for electrical air‑cleaning appliances (air purifiers) intended for household and similar use. It applies to appliances with rated voltages up to 250 V for single‑phase and 480 V for other appliances, and covers devices intended for use by laymen in homes, shops, light industry and farms. Amendment A12 (approved 2021‑10‑11, published 2022) supplements EN 60335‑2‑65 and references the general safety rules in EN 60335‑1.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and intended users: Focuses on reasonably foreseeable hazards to typical users; explicitly excludes children playing with the appliance and unsupervised use by very young children. Amendment A12 clarifies user categories and acknowledges vulnerable people may need additional measures.
  • Electrical and general safety: The standard supplements EN 60335‑1 (General requirements) with particular requirements specific to air‑cleaning appliances, addressing construction, protection against electric shock, thermal risks and other hazards encountered in normal use.
  • Marking and instructions: Clause changes in A12 update marking requirements (Clause 7.12), specifying safe‑use statements such as supervised use by children aged 8 and above and guidance for persons with reduced capabilities.
  • Normative references and tests: A12 adds and updates normative references (Annex ZC), including ISO 4892‑2 and ISO 4892‑4 (laboratory exposure to light sources), reflecting test and material‑exposure considerations for appliance components.
  • Regulatory timelines: National implementation and withdrawal dates are fixed in the amendment (e.g., latest implementation date dop 2023‑02‑12; conflicting standards withdrawal by dow 2025‑08‑12).

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers and product designers of air purifiers / air‑cleaning appliances for homes, offices, shops and light industrial settings.
  • Testing and certification laboratories performing conformity and safety testing against EN 60335‑1 and Part 2‑65 requirements.
  • Compliance officers, regulatory authorities and market surveillance bodies ensuring appliances meet European safety obligations.
  • Procurement teams and specifiers selecting safe, certified air‑cleaning equipment for commercial or institutional use.
