EN IEC 61300-3-30:2026 is a CENELEC European Standard that adopts IEC 61300-3-30:2026 for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. It specifies a three-dimensional interferometry-based method for measuring the endface geometry of rectangular multifibre ferrules, including fibre height, surface angles, tip radii, core dip and related geometry parameters. Engineers, test labs and quality teams use it to measure and report ferrule geometry in a consistent way.
What does EN IEC 61300-3-30:2026 specify?
EN IEC 61300-3-30:2026 specifies a test method for measuring the endface geometry of rectangular multifibre ferrules with an IEC defined optical interface. The document focuses on the geometry needed for physical contact between mated ferrules, especially fibre position relative to the endface, endface angle relative to the guide holes, fibre tip radii and core dip for multimode fibres.
The document is organized into clauses 1 to 8 and normative annexes A to F.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| A | Formulae for approximating the endface geometry |
| B | Surface angle sign convention |
| C | Fibre counting convention |
| D | Minus coplanarity and fibre plane angle determination |
| E | Calculation of core dip using the paraboloid method |
| F | Calculation of GL parameter |
What are the key requirements of EN IEC 61300-3-30:2026?
EN IEC 61300-3-30:2026 is built around a defined measurement area, a specified interferometric setup and a fixed processing sequence. In practice, the standard tells users what to measure, how to process the surface data and what results to report.
Measurement regions and ferrule types
The standard defines four regions on the ferrule endface: the region of interest (ROI), the extracting region, the averaging region and the core dip region. Table 1 assigns the required measurement areas and parameters for ferrule variants such as MT-04, MT-08, MT-12, MT-16, MT-24, MT-32 and MiniMT.
That matters because the software must use the right regions for the specific ferrule type. If the wrong ROI or fitting region is used, the measured geometry can shift enough to affect pass or fail decisions.
Apparatus and measurement uncertainty
Clause 6 requires a ferrule holder, a positioning stage and a three-dimensional interferometry analyser with an interferometric video microscope, a PC-based fringe interpretation unit and a monitor. The analyser shall measure fibre heights within ±50 nm and core dips within ±20 nm.
The microscope, phase shift actuator and ferrule holder tilt angle shall be calibrated. In practice, this means the equipment has to be stable and traceable enough for small geometry differences to be measured reliably.
Surface processing sequence
Clause 7 sets out the measurement workflow. The surface is mapped, the fibre regions are removed, a bi-parabolic surface is fitted to the ferrule area, the highest 3 % of pixels are removed, and then the highest 20 % of the remaining pixels are used to fit the best-fit plane PJ.
From that plane, the standard calculates ferrule surface angles SX and SY, fibre heights H and adjacent fibre height differential HA. It then fits a bi-parabolic curve to obtain ferrule surface radii RX and RY.
In practice, this sequence filters out local peaks and adhesive effects so the software measures the ferrule geometry rather than random surface noise.
Multimode fibre core dip and fibre tip radius
For multimode fibres, Clause 7 requires core dip C to be calculated using the paraboloid method in Annex E. If C is greater than 10 nm, the value is reported and the fibre tip radius step is skipped for that fibre. If C is 10 nm or less, C is not reported for that fibre and the fibre tip radius RF is measured instead.
That distinction matters because the standard treats core dip and tip radius as alternative outcomes for some fibres, not as always-report-both quantities.
Minus coplanarity, fibre plane angles and GL
Annex D defines minus coplanarity CF and the fibre plane angles GX and GY. For single-row ferrules, the fibre ends are analysed as a line; for multi-row ferrules, they are analysed as a plane. The reference is the average of the guide hole axes.
Annex F defines the GL parameter, which is used to assess the acceptability of an endface geometry. The standard says GL is determined only when core dip has been reported for 50 % or fewer of the fibres, and it uses the median RF value of fibres with negative core dip.
That means GL is a conditional merit function, not a universal output for every measurement.
Reporting
Clause 8 requires the test report to identify the DUT characteristics, the measurement setup, the uncertainty and the final measured and calculated values. The report includes SX, SY, CF, GX, GY, RF, C, GL, RX, RY, H and HA, plus any deviations from the procedure.
What terms does EN IEC 61300-3-30:2026 define?
EN IEC 61300-3-30:2026 uses a small set of recurring terms that are central to the measurement method.
- Region of interest (ROI) - the rectangular ferrule area selected for endface analysis and centred on the fibre array.
- Extracting region - the circular area around each fibre that is removed before fitting the ferrule surface.
- Averaging region - the circular area on each fibre used to calculate fibre height and, when needed, fit the fibre tip sphere.
- Core dip - the difference in height between the fibre core and the surrounding cladding at the endface, used for multimode fibres.
- Minus coplanarity (CF) - the largest offset of a fibre end below the best-fit fibre line or plane.
- Geometry limit (GL) - a calculated merit function used to judge the acceptability of the endface geometry.
- Ferrule holder - the device that fixes the ferrule during interferometric measurement and sets its orientation.
Who uses EN IEC 61300-3-30:2026?
EN IEC 61300-3-30:2026 is used by manufacturers of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components, test laboratories, quality assurance teams and product engineers working with rectangular multifibre ferrules. It is also relevant to organizations qualifying MT and MPO-type connector interfaces, because the document refers to guide-pin based multifibre connector plugs in IEC 61754-5 and IEC 61754-7.
In practice, users apply it when they need to inspect ferrule polish quality, verify fibre protrusion and alignment, compare supplier results, or document geometry measurements for production control and incoming inspection.
What changed in EN IEC 61300-3-30:2026 from the previous edition?
EN IEC 61300-3-30:2026 supersedes EN IEC 61300-3-30:2021. The IEC foreword describes this edition as a technical revision of the earlier 2020 edition.
The stated changes are:
- clarification of region diameter symbols
- introduction of x116 and x132 regions of interest to support MT-16 and MT-32 ferrule types
- preparation of GL parameter tables for 16-, 24- and 32-fibre ferrules
- clarification of the neighbouring fibres definition when computing adjacent height
- improved figures in the annexes
Which standards are used with EN IEC 61300-3-30:2026?
EN IEC 61300-3-30:2026 states that it has no normative references, but its bibliography and endorsement notice point to related IEC standards used alongside it.

4 General description
Guide pin based multifibre connector plugs in IEC 61754-5 and all parts of IEC 61754-7 typically
have a rectangular endface with a long axis and a short axis. Ideally a flat polish is desired on
the endface with the fibres protruding slightly and all in the same plane to assure physical
contact of the fibre cores when two connectors are intermated. In practice, the endface typically
has two different curvatures across the surface along the long and short axis. Since mated
ferrules are aligned by pins in the guide holes, the endface of the ferrule shall be properly
oriented (SX and SY angles) with respect to the guide holes to achieve positive contact. The
endface angle SX in the long axis (X-axis) and the endface angle SY in the short axis (Y-axis)
(as defined in Annex B) are measured by finding the best fit plane (P ), based on a percentage
J
of the highest points in a specified region of interest. The highest points typically show the
greatest modulation from an interferometric standpoint. This allows for more robust
measurements and greater repeatability between different interferometers.
The angle of the best fit plane P is calculated by comparing it to the reference plane P which
J
is perpendicular to the averaged axis of the guide holes. The height H (positive is a protrusion)
of the fibres is a planar height defined as the distance between the fibre endface and the best
fit plane. Core dip is only relevant to multimode fibres because the large core is softer than the
cladding of the fibre and tends to polish away faster. Core dip is calculated using the paraboloid
method described in Annex E.
One method is described for measuring the polish angle and fibre position for a single ferrule
multifibre connector by analysing the endface with a three-dimensional interferometry type
surface analyser.

5 Measurement regions
The following regions shall be defined on the ferrule endface.
a) Region of interest (ROI): the ROI is set on the ferrule surface and defined by a rectangular
region having a long axis (X-axis) and a short axis (Y-axis). The region of interest is chosen
to cover the intended contact zone of the ferrule endface when the ferrules are mated. The
region of interest shall be centred on the fibre array. See Figure 1. Refer to Table 1 for
measurement areas that shall be used for different connectors.
b) Extracting region: the extracting region, which includes the fibre endfac
