Overview

EN 61558-2-3:2010 (IEC 61558-2-3:2010) is the European/CENELEC adoption of the international standard that specifies particular safety requirements and tests for ignition transformers for gas and oil burners. This second edition replaces the 1999 edition and updates Part 2-3 to align with EN/IEC 61558-1:2005. The standard covers conventional ignition transformers and those that incorporate electronic circuits, and it is intended to be used together with the general requirements in Part 1.

Key topics and requirements

EN 61558-2-3 supplements EN/IEC 61558-1 by adding ignition-transformer-specific requirements and test procedures. Major technical topics include:

  • Ratings and classification - defining intended use, rated voltages/currents and product classes for ignition transformers.
  • Marking and documentation - required information for safe installation and operation.
  • Protection against electric shock - construction and insulation measures to reduce shock risk.
  • Output characteristics - tests for no-load output voltage, output under load and short-circuit behaviour.
  • Short-circuit and overload protection - requirements and test methods to ensure safe response to faults.
  • Heating and temperature rise - limits and thermal testing to verify safe operating temperatures.
  • Insulation, dielectric strength and leakage current - test procedures for insulation resistance and dielectric integrity.
  • Creepage distances and clearances - specified values (see annexes) for material groups to prevent tracking and flashover.
  • Mechanical strength, ingress protection and corrosion resistance - to ensure robust installation in burner environments.
  • Construction, components and internal wiring - component selection, wiring practices and terminal requirements.
  • Annexes - include tables and guidance such as preferred operational parameters and creepage/clearance values for different material CTI groups.

The document also recognises intellectual property considerations and recommends a transitional period for manufacturers and test houses after publication.

Applications and users

This standard is essential for:

  • Manufacturers and designers of ignition transformers and ignition power-supply units for gas and oil burners.
  • OEMs and boiler/burner system integrators specifying safe ignition components.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies performing conformity assessment and type testing.
  • Safety engineers and compliance teams ensuring products meet CE/EC Directive requirements (notably electrical safety directives referenced in the foreword).

Applying EN 61558-2-3 helps ensure reliable ignition performance, reduced fire/electric shock risk, and regulatory compliance for heating and burner equipment.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
