Overview
EN 60670-22:2006/A11:2024 is a crucial European standard issued by CLC that specifies particular requirements for connecting boxes and enclosures used in electrical accessories intended for household and similar fixed electrical installations. This amendment updates the 2006 edition, ensuring the standard stays current with technological advancements and safety expectations.
The standard focuses on boxes and enclosures designed with provisions for suspension means and includes essential modifications related to normative references, testing methods, heat resistance, and annexes. It aligns with the broader EN IEC 60670-1 series, which addresses general requirements for electrical installation equipment.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
EN 60670-22 covers requirements for electrical boxes and enclosures specifically designed to house connecting devices. It ensures mechanical durability, safety, and compatibility with connecting devices.Normative References
The amendment updates references to the IEC 60998 series, which governs connecting devices for low-voltage household circuits. These include:- IEC 60998-1: General requirements for connecting devices
- Parts 2-1 to 2-4: Specific requirements for screw-type, screwless, insulation-piercing, and twist-on connecting devices.
Testing Protocols
The standard stipulates that connecting boxes with provision for terminals or connecting devices shall be tested using devices recommended by the manufacturer. Devices conforming to the IEC 60998 series do not require repeat testing.Heat Resistance
Boxes and enclosures made from insulating materials must demonstrate sufficient resistance to heat, confirmed by specified testing procedures. Additionally, temperature rises during normal use are strictly limited.Marking and Dimensions
Clear marking requirements specify conductor cross-sections, number of connecting devices, and conductor capacity. Minimum internal dimensions and volume requirements ensure safe and practical installation.Special National Conditions
The standard acknowledges specific national provisions, such as:- Incorporation and testing exemptions for certain terminal blocks in Germany and the United Kingdom.
- Mandatory marking in the UK.
- Specific dimension and volume requirements for boxes in Germany.
Compliance with EU Directives
EN 60670-22:2006/A11:2024 supports compliance with Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive), offering harmonized standards to ensure electrical safety across member states.
Applications
Household Electrical Installations
Guarantees safety and reliability for fixed electrical installations in homes, including lighting, socket outlets, and other electrical accessories.Similar Fixed Installations
Applicable to residential buildings, small commercial premises, and similar fixed electrical systems where connecting boxes and enclosures facilitate cable and device connections.Manufacturing and Quality Assurance
Provides manufacturers with clear criteria to design, test, and certify connecting boxes and enclosures, enabling market access within Europe under harmonized standards.Installation and Maintenance Guidelines
Assists electricians and installation professionals by specifying the construction, dimensioning, and performance requirements to ensure safe and efficient installation practices.
