Flexible insulating sleeving - Part 3: Specification for individual types of sleeving - Sheets 420 to 422: Polyethylene terephthalate textile sleeving with acrylic based coating

Gives the requirements for three types of sleeving constructed from polyethylene terephthalate yarns using either braided or knitted construction, with a continuous acrylic based coating and differentiated by their breakdown voltage: high breakdown voltage (sheet 420), medium breakdown voltage (sheet 421) and low breakdown voltage (sheet 422). Experience of product performance indicates that sleeving of the types specified in these sheets may be suitable for operation at 130 °C or in some applications at temperatures up to 155 °C.

Overview

EN 60684-3-420 to 422:2002 is a European standard developed by the CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) that defines specifications for flexible insulating sleeving, specifically polyethylene terephthalate (PET) textile sleeving with an acrylic based coating. This standard focuses on three types of sleeving characterized by their breakdown voltages: high (sheet 420), medium (sheet 421), and low (sheet 422). These sleeving types are constructed from PET yarns through either braided or knitted techniques and feature a continuous acrylic coating.

Designed for electrical insulation use, the sleeving is appropriate for operation under temperatures up to 130 °C and, in some cases, up to 155 °C. The sleeving's internal diameters range from 0.5 mm to 25 mm and typically come in colors such as black, yellow, brown, blue, and red, with options for custom sizes and colors.

Key Topics

  • Material Construction: Utilizes polyethylene terephthalate yarns combined with an acrylic based continuous coating for durability and electrical insulation.
  • Sleeving Types: Classified into three sheets based on breakdown voltage ratings:
    • Sheet 420: High breakdown voltage
    • Sheet 421: Medium breakdown voltage
    • Sheet 422: Low breakdown voltage
  • Construction Methods: Sleeving is either braided or knitted, impacting flexibility and mechanical strength.
  • Dimensional Requirements: Detailed specifications for internal diameters and wall thickness with defined tolerances ensure consistent quality.
  • Thermal Performance: Suitable for continuous operation at 130 °C, with some applications tolerating up to 155 °C.
  • Electrical Properties:
    • Breakdown voltage thresholds vary across sleeving types, tested at room, elevated, and damp heat conditions.
    • Insulation resistance requirements guarantee effective electrical isolation.
  • Mechanical Testing:
    • Resistance to soldering heat for small bore sleeving (up to 5 mm).
    • Bending tests after heating and at low temperature ensure the coating remains intact without cracking or delamination.
  • Color Coding: Adheres to IEC 60757 for color standardization to support identification and application specification.

Applications

EN 60684-3-420 to 422 PET textile sleeving with acrylic coating is essential for a variety of electrical and electronic applications requiring flexible insulation solutions:

  • Wire and Cable Insulation: Protecting wires and cables against mechanical abrasion, electrical shock, and environmental factors.
  • Electrical Equipment Manufacturing: Used in devices where flexible insulating materials ensure safety and operational stability at elevated temperatures.
  • Automotive and Aerospace: Suitable where high-temperature resistant insulation is necessary for wiring harnesses and connectors.
  • Industrial Machinery: Provides durable insulation to protect wiring in harsh industrial conditions.
  • Consumer Electronics: Used to secure and insulate delicate wire assemblies, enhancing product reliability.

The sleeving types covered by this standard contribute to enhanced safety and longevity of electrical installations by ensuring appropriate electrical and mechanical properties aligned with operating environments.

Practical Value

Implementing the EN 60684-3-420 to 422 standard ensures that polyethylene terephthalate textile sleeving with acrylic coatings meets consistent quality and performance criteria critical for electrical insulation. This leads to improved safety, reduced failure rates, and enhanced durability of electrical installations across diverse industries. Compliance with this standard also facilitates international harmonization and interoperability of insulated components in global markets.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate i
