Overview
EN 60684-3-420 to 422:2002 is a European standard developed by the CENELEC (CLC) for flexible insulating sleeving used in electrical and electronics applications. Specifically, it sets out the requirements for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) textile sleeving with an acrylic-based coating. The standard covers three distinct types of sleeving, differentiated by their breakdown voltage capabilities: high (sheet 420), medium (sheet 421), and low (sheet 422). These protective sleeves are available in both braided and knitted constructions and are commonly used to insulate, protect, and organize electrical wiring.
This standard is aligned with IEC 60684-3-420 to 422:2002, ensuring consistency in quality and safety requirements across international markets.
Key Topics
- Material Construction: Covers sleeving made from PET yarn, in either braided or knitted form, uniformly coated with an acrylic material for enhanced performance.
- Voltage Categories: Specifies three types based on breakdown voltage:
- Sheet 420: High breakdown voltage
- Sheet 421: Medium breakdown voltage
- Sheet 422: Low breakdown voltage
- Thermal Endurance: Indicates suitability for continuous operation at temperatures up to 130 °C, with some applications extending to 155 °C.
- Dimensional Range: Applies to sleeves with internal diameters from 0.5 mm to 25 mm; additional sizes and colors may be available as custom items if performance requirements are met.
- Essential Performance Requirements:
- Flexibility and mechanical integrity after heat and cold exposure
- Resistance to soldering heat and hydrolysis (breakdown due to moisture)
- High insulation resistance and specified minimum breakdown voltages
- Adherence and durability of the acrylic coating
Applications
Flexible PET sleeving with an acrylic-based coating is widely utilized for electrical insulation and mechanical protection in numerous settings, including:
- Wiring Harnesses: Insulates and organizes wires in electrical panels, automotive assemblies, and industrial machinery.
- Consumer Electronics: Protects internal wiring in devices and appliances from abrasion and heat.
- Transformers and Motors: Insulates windings and connections, supporting safe, long-term operation in environments with elevated temperatures.
- Renewable Energy Systems: Used in solar installations and wind power equipment for cable management and protection.
- Aerospace and Transportation: Offers lightweight, reliable protection in aircraft, trains, and other vehicles where space and weight considerations are critical.
By adhering to EN 60684-3-420 to 422:2002, users and manufacturers gain confidence in the electrical insulation performance, durability, and safety of the sleeving materials for various demanding applications.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate i
