(Amendment)Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-39: Particular requirements for commercial electric multi-purpose cooking pans
- Abstract
This European Standard Deals with the safety of electrically operated commerical multi-purpose cooking pans not intended for household use. The rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances connected between one phase and neutral and 480 V for other appliances. Appliances within the scope of this standard are typically used in restaurants, canteens, hospitals, and commercial enterprises such as bakeries, butcheries, etc. The electrical part of appliances making use of other forms of energy is also within the scope of this standard.

prEN IEC 60335-2-39:2026/prA1:2026 is a CENELEC draft amendment to the European safety standard for commercial electric multi-purpose cooking pans. It updates the safety requirements for electrically operated appliances used outside the household, including appliances used in restaurants, canteens, hospitals and other commercial premises.
What does prEN IEC 60335-2-39:2026/prA1:2026 specify?
prEN IEC 60335-2-39:2026/prA1:2026 modifies prEN IEC 60335-2-39:2026 for the safety of commercial electric multi-purpose cooking pans not intended for household use. The scope covers appliances with rated voltage up to 250 V for single-phase appliances connected between one phase and neutral, and up to 480 V for other appliances.
The amendment also extends the scope to include DC supplied appliances and the electrical part of appliances that use other forms of energy. That matters in practice because manufacturers still need to assess the electrical hazards even when the pan is not wholly electric.
The document is organised as a draft amendment with a European foreword, scope, terms and definitions, heating, charging of metal-ion batteries, endurance, stability and mechanical hazards, construction, and Annex B.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex B | Battery-operated appliances, separable batteries and detachable batteries for battery-operated appliances - deleted by this amendment |
What are the key requirements of prEN IEC 60335-2-39:2026/prA1:2026?
The amendment focuses on electrical supply scope, battery-related clauses, mechanical safety, and construction details that affect safe operation and cleaning. In practice, it tightens the checks around moving parts, lids and baskets, and it changes how battery-related cases are handled.
Scope and supply
The scope now includes DC supplied appliances and removes the last battery-operated item from the scope wording. For suppliers, that means the product description and conformity assessment need to match the revised electrical supply range.
Charging of metal-ion batteries
Clause 12 says the Part 1 clause on charging of metal-ion batteries applies. This tells designers and test labs to follow the general appliance rules for that charging function instead of treating it as a special local exception.
Endurance
Clause 18 is marked not applicable. For practical use, that means this amendment does not add a separate endurance check in this part and the assessment follows the base standard structure.
Stability and mechanical hazards
Clause 20.2 strengthens the requirements for protective enclosures, guards and similar parts, which must be non-detachable or interlocked and mechanically strong. The same clause also makes clear that parts needed for tilting movement, such as handles or handwheels, are treated differently from ordinary moving parts.
New subclause 20.102 covers appliances with automated raising and lowering of the basket. The motorized parts must not trap fingers or hands during operation or cleaning, and the force on hands and fingers is checked against the basket load specified in the instructions for use. In practice, this is a design and validation issue for any powered basket lift.
New subclause 20.103 covers automatic opening and closing of the lid. The lid movement must not create a hazard, and the closing movement is checked against pressure, force and kinetic energy limits. A hold-to-run device is not treated as automatic operation, so the control method affects which safety check applies.
Construction
Clause 22.110 changes the wording from grips to handles and adds a requirement for at least one handle on lids that are not motorized. That affects the product design, because the lid must be easy to operate safely and consistently.
What terms does prEN IEC 60335-2-39:2026/prA1:2026 define?
The amendment uses these key terms in its safety provisions:
- Direct current (DC) - electrical supply from a unidirectional current source, now included in the scope wording.
- Metal-ion batteries - rechargeable batteries covered by the charging clause in Part 1.
- Hold-to-run device - a control that only keeps motion going while the operator maintains the control action.
- Basket - the part that can be raised or lowered in the automated basket provisions.
- Lid - the closing part covered by the automatic opening and closing requirements.
- Protective enclosures - covers, guards or similar parts used to prevent access to hazards.
- Separable batteries and detachable batteries - battery arrangements named in the deleted Annex B.
Who uses prEN IEC 60335-2-39:2026/prA1:2026?
Manufacturers and designers of commercial cooking equipment use this amendment to align product design with the revised safety requirements. Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies use it to check basket movement, lid movement, construction details and battery-related provisions.
It is also relevant for quality managers, technical buyers and procurement teams in restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries, butcheries and other commercial enterprises that buy this type of appliance. In practice, they use it to specify safe equipment, review test evidence and compare products against the same safety basis.
What changed in prEN IEC 60335-2-39:2026/prA1:2026 from the previous edition?
This draft amendment updates the underlying Part 2-39 text with these stated changes:
- scope extended to DC supplied appliances
- the scope item for battery-operated appliances removed
- Clause 12 aligned with Part 1 for charging of metal-ion batteries
- Clause 18 marked not applicable
- new requirements for automated basket raising and lowering
- new requirements for automatic lid opening and closing
- Clause 22.110 updated to use handles and require a lid handle when the lid is not motorized
- Annex B deleted
Which standards are used with prEN IEC 60335-2-39:2026/prA1:2026?
The draft says it is to be read with prEN IEC 60335-2-39:2026 and prEN IEC 60335-2-39:2026/prAA:2026. It also states that the text is based on IEC 60335-2-39/A1:2025.
What does the prEN IEC 60335-2-39:2026/prA1:2026 document contain?
This document contains clause-by-clause amendment text rather than a full standalone product standard. Its content is concentrated on scope wording, selected replacements in the body of the standard, new mechanical-safety subclauses, and the deletion of Annex B.
It includes inspection-based checks, force and movement checks for baskets and lids, and construction wording that affects handles and guards. For engineering and testing teams, the useful part is the exact location of each change, so the amendment can be applied to the base standard during design review, test planning and conformity assessment.
