• Clause 11 on heating is modified. The amendment adds a note linking temperature-rise limits for handles, knobs, grips, keyboards, keypads and similar parts to Table 3, and it changes the treatment of external accessible surfaces near adjacent surfaces. In practice, designers have to check not only main touch points but also nearby areas where users may contact the appliance.
• Marking may be needed for higher local surface rise. Where external accessible surfaces up to 100 mm from adjacent surfaces exceed the limit by up to 25 K, the relevant part must be marked with IEC 60417-5041 or equivalent text. That means the product design and its markings have to work together.
• Clause 12 makes Part 1 applicable to charging of metal-ion batteries. This tells the reader to apply the general safety rules from Part 1 when the appliance includes battery charging.
• Clause 18 states that Part 1 is not applicable for endurance. This is important for test planning because endurance is handled differently from the base part.
• Clause 20.2 strengthens mechanical protection. Protective enclosures, guards and similar parts must be non-detachable or interlocked and must have adequate mechanical strength. That affects access prevention, fasteners and enclosure design.
• Annex B is deleted. Battery-operated appliances, separable batteries and detachable batteries are no longer treated in that annex, so Part 1 applies without the former modification.
