Overview
EN 60947-5-5:1997/A11:2013 is a European standard published by CENELEC, focusing on low-voltage switchgear and controlgear. Specifically, it covers Part 5-5: Control circuit devices and switching elements, detailing the requirements for electrical emergency stop devices with mechanical latching function. This amendment (A11), approved in 2012 and published in 2013, updates the original 1997 standard to align with evolving safety directives such as the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and the Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC.
The standard ensures the design, performance, and testing criteria for electrical emergency stop devices used in control circuits. These devices are critical for ensuring immediate and reliable shutdown of machinery in hazardous situations, enhancing workplace safety and compliance with legal requirements.
Key Topics
- Safety Functions: Defines the mechanical latching function of electrical emergency stop devices, ensuring that once engaged, the device remains latched until manually reset.
- Design Requirements: Specifies construction and operational parameters to guarantee reliable performance under electrical and mechanical stresses.
- Compliance and Testing: Provides protocols for verifying correct operation, durability, and conformance to EU essential safety requirements.
- Noise Emission: Clarifies that noise levels from these devices are not considered a relevant hazard and thus are excluded from specific limits.
- Scope and Application Limitations: Focuses exclusively on low-voltage control circuits; does not cover requirements related to noise or external environmental factors.
- Harmonization with EU Directives: Supports essential provisions of the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC, facilitating CE marking and regulatory compliance.
- Annex ZZ Guidance: Offers informative material on the relationship between the standard and EU directives, helping manufacturers and engineers ensure legal alignment.
Applications
- Industrial Machinery Safety: Electrical emergency stop devices designed to quickly disconnect power or control signals in production lines, conveyors, or robotic systems.
- Control Panels: Integration into low-voltage switchgear assemblies to provide fail-safe emergency shutdown options.
- Automated Equipment: Used in various automated systems requiring immediate stopping capability with mechanical latching to prevent accidental restart.
- Safety Systems: Key components in safety control circuits where reliable manual reset is mandated after emergency actuation.
- Machinery Design and Manufacturing: Assists OEMs and system integrators in designing compliant control devices and verifying product safety through standard testing practices.
