EN IEC 60034-8:2026 is a CLC standard for rotating electrical machines. It specifies how to identify winding connection points, mark terminals, indicate direction of rotation, relate terminal markings to rotation, and mark auxiliary devices, so manufacturers and users can wire machines and associated equipment in a consistent way.
What does EN IEC 60034-8:2026 specify?
EN IEC 60034-8:2026 applies to AC and DC machines and sets rules for terminal markings, rotation direction, and common connection diagrams. It is organized into clauses on scope, references, terms, symbols, rotation, terminal marking rules, auxiliary terminal marking rules, and a normative annex of connection diagrams.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Connection diagrams for common applications |
The annex is used as a practical reference for standard wiring arrangements. Clause 6 points back to these diagrams when a manufacturer prepares connection instructions for a specific machine.
What are the key requirements of EN IEC 60034-8:2026?
EN IEC 60034-8:2026 gives a marking system that links the machine terminals, the internal winding arrangement, and the direction of rotation. In practice, this lets manufacturers label machines so installers can connect them correctly and so control gear and protection devices match the machine wiring.
Direction of rotation
Clause 5 defines direction of rotation as the shaft rotation seen when facing the D-end. For most machines, the default direction is clockwise unless another direction is specified; for machines that can run only one way, an arrow has to show the direction and be permanently attached and easy to see.
For synchronous generators and motor-generators in the scope of IEC 60034-3 or IEC 60034-33, rotation is tied to the prime mover. For synchronous compensators, the direction is agreed between manufacturer and purchaser. This matters because the same machine may be installed in different drive systems, and the marking must match the intended mechanical direction.
Terminal marking rules
Clause 6.1 requires terminal markings to identify all winding and auxiliary terminations that the user can access. Three-phase AC machines with more than three terminals, and all other machines and auxiliary devices with more than two terminals, must also have connection instructions that follow the standard.
The marking format uses upper-case Latin letters and Arabic numerals without spaces. Letters I and O are not used because they can be confused with 1 and 0. Duplicate markings are allowed only when each lead can perform the same electrical function, while shared-current terminals use an added numerical suffix. The protective earthing terminal is marked PE, or with the IEC 60417-5019 symbol.
Suffixes and prefixes
Clause 6.2 assigns numerical suffixes to winding element ends and tapping points, and lower numbers are used for the ends closest to the supply connection. Clause 6.3 uses numerical prefixes to distinguish separate windings or current systems, including multi-speed machines.
This is important for motors with multiple elements, tapping points, or separate windings, because the numbers show the order in which leads belong together. In a workshop or on site, that helps avoid cross-connecting elements that should remain separate.
Winding identification by machine type
Clause 6.4 gives the basic letter symbols for induction machines: U, V, W for the primary winding, N for neutral, and K, L, M, Q for secondary windings. Single-phase machines use U for the primary winding and Z for the auxiliary winding, while multiple three-phase groups use a prefix to identify each group.
Clause 6.5 extends the same logic to synchronous machines. The field winding of d.c. separately excited synchronous machines is marked F1 and F2, and permanent magnet machines use the same marking approach as induction machines. This helps keep the terminal logic consistent across related machine types.
Relation between marking and rotation
Clause 6.7 links the terminal order to the required direction of rotation. For multi-phase machines not covered by IEC 60034-3 or IEC 60034-33, the terminal sequence is arranged so that clockwise rotation follows the time sequence of the phase voltages, and reverse rotation is obtained by reversing the supply connection order.
The clause also gives rules for multi-speed, single-phase, multi-phase group, and d.c. machines. For example, single-phase reversible machines use specific link arrangements between the main and auxiliary windings, and d.c. machines use polarity relationships between armature and field terminals. In practice, this is the part designers use to make sure the nameplate marking and the actual rotation match.
Auxiliary devices
Clause 7 adds marking rules for auxiliary terminals such as brakes, capacitors, transformers, heaters, thermometers, thermocouples, thermostats, thermistors, and switches. These devices use the same general notation rules, with a device code plus a prefix for the circuit or device and a suffix for the lead function.
That matters because many machines include built-in devices that must be connected correctly for protection, monitoring, or starting. Clear auxiliary marking reduces wiring errors during installation and maintenance.
What terms does EN IEC 60034-8:2026 define?
Terminal marking - the permanent identification of an external winding or auxiliary termination that tells the user what the terminal does.
Connecting points - internal current-transfer points used to permanently connect winding ends or winding elements together.
Tapping points - intermediate connection points on part of a winding element.
Winding leads - insulated conductors that connect a winding to its termination.
Winding element - a part of a winding whose turns or coils are permanently connected together as one unit.
Multi-speed motor - a motor that can operate at two or more definite speeds.
D-end - the end of the machine that accommodates the shaft end, which is the reference end for rotation direction.
Who uses EN IEC 60034-8:2026?
EN IEC 60034-8:2026 is used by rotating machine manufacturers, winding and assembly engineers, and designers of motor control and protection equipment. It is also relevant to purchasers, quality managers, and installers who need the terminal markings and rotation direction to match the machine’s intended use.
It is especially useful in industries that buy or build AC and DC rotating electrical machines with multiple windings, auxiliary devices, or multi-speed arrangements. Test and documentation teams use it when preparing connection diagrams, nameplate data, and wiring instructions.
What changed in EN IEC 60034-8:2026 from the previous edition?
EN IEC 60034-8:2026 cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2007 and Amendment 1:2014. The edition is described as a technical revision, and the stated main technical change is the inclusion of turbine-type synchronous machines in the scope.
Which standards are used with EN IEC 60034-8:2026?
EN IEC 60034-8:2026 cites five normative references that support its marking and rotation rules.
- IEC 60034-1 - provides the general basis for rating and performance and supplies terms used in the document.
- IEC 60034-3 - covers synchronous generators driven by steam turbines or combustion gas turbines, and synchronous compensators.
- IEC 60034-33 - covers synchronous hydrogenerators, including motor-generators, with specific requirements.
- IEC 60417-1 - provides graphical symbols used on equipment.
- IEC 60445 - sets the basic terminal identification and conductor termination principles, including PE marking.
What does the EN IEC 60034-8:2026 document contain?
EN IEC 60034-8:2026 contains symbol tables for general use, DC and single-phase commutator machines, AC machines without commutators, and auxiliary devices. It also contains figures that show terminal markings for common machine types, including three-phase, single-phase, six-phase, synchronous, and DC arrangements.
The standard gives step-by-step marking logic for suffixes, prefixes, duplicate terminals, shared terminals, and earthing terminals. Annex A collects connection diagrams for common applications such as delta, star, dual-voltage, star-delta, part-winding, multi-speed, reversible single-phase, and DC machine connections.
For users who design or check wiring, the figures act as worked examples of how the rules are applied to real terminal layouts. For users preparing installation instructions or factory documentation, the document provides the standard notation to describe the intended connection and direction of rotation clearly.

277 5 Direction of rotation
278 The direction of rotation shall be that of the shaft observed when facing the D-end.
279 Synchronous generators and motor-generators in the scope of IEC 60034-3 or IEC 60034-33
280 shall have the direction of rotation as imposed by the prime mover being in turbine or motor
281 mode. For synchronous compensators the direction of rotation shall be agreed between
282 Manufacturer and Purchaser. This direction of rotation shall be marked as per 6.7.
283 If not otherwise specified, all Machines apart from Synchronous and Motor generators in the
284 scope of IEC 60034-3 or IEC 60034-33 shall have a clockwise direction of rotation.”
285 For other Machines configurations, including unidirectional machines, apart for Synchronous
286 generators and motor-generators in the scope of 60034-3 or 60034-33 shall have an arrow
287 located on the enclosure to show the direction of rotation.
288 6 Rules for terminal markings
289 6.1 General
290 6.1.1 Application
291 A terminal marking shall identify all winding and auxiliary device terminations accessible to the
292 user.
293 NOTE External line connections and winding arrangements used for common applications are shown in Annex A.

299 6.1.3 Alphanumeric marking notation
300 The terminal marking comprises upper-case Latin characters and Arabic numerals. The
301 characters shall be arranged without spaces.
302 Each winding, winding phase or auxiliary circuit shall be assigned a letter symbol(s) in
303 accordance with Clause 4.
304 To prevent confusion with the numerals 1 and 0, the letters “I” and “O” shall not be used.
305 6.1.4 Duplicate winding terminals
306 Several leads of a machine can have the same marking only if each of them is capable of
307 completely fulfilling the same electrical function, so that either one of them can be used for the
308 connection. See Figure 9.
309 6.1.5 Shared terminals
310 When several leads or conductors are provided to share the current, the terminal markings shall
311 be identified by an additional numerical suffix separated by a hyphen. See Figure 10.
312 Some multi-speed motors having two or more independent windings may produce circulating
313 currents in the de-energized winding. In this case, the terminal markings for the open delta
314 connection shall be identified by an additional numerical suffix separated by a hyphen. See
315 Figure A.15.
