Overview

The EN 61666:2010/A1:2021 standard, developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CLC), addresses the identification of terminals within industrial systems, installations, equipment, and industrial products. Aligned with the International Electrotechnical Commission's IEC 61666:2010/A1:2021, this amendment updates the original standard to improve the clarity and uniformity of terminal designation in electrical engineering contexts.

Terminals within complex industrial systems require precise and standardized identification to ensure efficient installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. This European Standard supports engineers, designers, and manufacturers by specifying a structured method for terminal marking, facilitating consistent documentation and communication across projects and regions.

Key Topics

  • Terminal Identification: EN 61666 defines a clear methodology for marking terminals within systems, distinguishing between function and product aspects.
  • Reference Designation Updates: The amendment modifies terminal reference designations from single-level reference marks (e.g., -V1) to hierarchical designations (e.g., -H1), enhancing systematic representation.
  • Graphical Symbols and Documentation: The standard integrates graphical symbols for terminals that are used on electrical diagrams, schematics, and related technical documentation to support visual clarity.
  • Terminal Designation Sets: Various figures in the amendment exemplify design implementations that relate terminal identification to functional roles and product configurations, enabling practical application in real-world systems.
  • International Consistency: EN 61666:2010/A1 follows IEC and ISO/IEC directives, ensuring worldwide compatibility and facilitating cross-border industrial cooperation.

Applications

The standard is critical for any stakeholders involved with the design, manufacturing, and maintenance of industrial electrical systems and installations:

  • Electrical Engineers: Use EN 61666 to apply consistent terminal identification when designing control panels, machines, or installations.
  • Manufacturers of Industrial Equipment: Adopt the standard to label terminal points accurately for clarity in production and end-user servicing.
  • System Integrators and Installers: Benefit from standardized terminal markings to reduce error and improve the efficiency of installation and maintenance activities.
  • Technical Documentation Specialists: Use standardized symbols and identification guidelines from EN 61666 to create clear, internationally understandable electrical schematics and manuals.
  • Quality and Safety Auditors: Leverage the standard to verify the traceability and safety compliance of terminal identifications within industrial systems.

Related Standards

EN 61666:2010/A1:2021 intersects with several key standards in electrotechnical documentation and engineering practices:

  • IEC 60617 – Graphical symbols for electrical diagrams, supporting symbol standardization.
  • ISO/IEC 81346 – Structuring principles and reference designations for industrial systems and products.
  • EN 61346 – Basic principles for structuring products and systems.
  • IEC 60417 – Graphical symbols for use on equipment.
  • EN 60204 – Safety of machinery – Electrical equipment of machines, which relies on clear terminal designation for safety compliance.
