Overview
EN 61666:2010/A1:2021 is a European standard developed by CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, CENELEC) for the identification of terminals within industrial systems, installations, equipment, and industrial products. Originating from IEC 61666:2010/A1:2021, this amendment standardizes how terminals are marked and referenced, supporting clear and unambiguous communication in electrical and electronic engineering. By implementing EN 61666 and its amendment, companies can improve safety, maintenance efficiency, and product lifecycle management through consistent terminal identification.
Key Topics
- Terminal Identification Systems: The standard outlines approaches for consistently identifying and labelling terminals within complex industrial setups, ensuring clarity in diagrams, schematics, and technical documentation.
- Graphical Symbols: It aligns with international practices for graphical symbols on engineering drawings, charts, and product documentation, supporting universal understanding.
- Reference Designations: EN 61666 sets guidance for both single-level and multi-level reference designations, making it easier to manage and modify systems throughout their lifecycle.
- Practical Examples: The amendment clarifies designation principles using updated examples (such as three-phase motors and functional diagrams), highlighting best practices for applying terminal identifications in real-world designs.
Applications
The proper identification of terminals, as defined in EN 61666:2010/A1:2021, is critical across various industrial sectors. Key applications include:
- Industrial Automation and Control: Enhances troubleshooting, maintenance, and upgrades in automated production lines by providing clear wiring identification and documentation.
- Manufacturing: Ensures consistent terminal labeling in electrical cabinets, machinery, and product components, minimizing wiring errors and ensuring compliance with international and customer-specific requirements.
- Facility Management: Supports operation and maintenance of electrical installations in factories, utilities, and infrastructure, enabling accurate mapping and diagnostics.
- Engineering Design: Facilitates clear communication among engineers, installers, and inspectors by referencing standardized terminal codes and graphical symbols in technical drawings and product documentation.
- Product Lifecycle Management: Streamlines retrofitting, expansion, and replacement of systems by ensuring legacy and new installations use compatible identification schemes.
Implementing this standard supports not only compliance with European regulations but also promotes best practices for workplace safety, equipment reliability, and interoperability of products across markets.
Related Standards
EN 61666:2010/A1:2021 complements and is typically used in conjunction with several other European and international industrial standards:
- IEC 61666: The foundational international standard for terminal identification, on which the European standard is based.
- EN IEC 61082-1: Focuses on preparation of documents used in electrotechnology, including diagrams and layouts that integrate terminal identification.
- EN 81346-1 / -2: Provides rules for structuring reference designations and object-oriented marking in industrial systems.
- EN 60445 / EN 60446: Related to basic and safety principles for marking and identification of electrical equipment terminals and conductor colors.
- ISO 14617: Addresses graphical symbols for diagrams.
These related standards ensure cohesive application of identification, documentation, and symbol usage across the electrical and electronic engineering disciplines.
By adhering to EN 61666:2010/A1:2021, professionals in electrical and industrial engineering benefit from improved clarity in system documentation, enhanced product safety, and streamlined operations at every stage of the system life cycle.
