General Information
Overview
EN IEC 62386-251:2023 (IEC 62386-251:2023) specifies a Memory Bank 1 extension (Device Type 50) for the Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI). This part extends the IEC 62386 series to enable asset management functionality for compatible lighting control gear. It is intended to be used in conjunction with IEC 62386-101 and IEC 62386-102, and applies only to control gear complying with IEC 62386-102.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Memory bank extension: Defines additional fields in Memory Bank 1 to store luminaire and asset data (see “Memory bank 1, luminaire information” in the standard).
- Method of operation: Specifies how the extended memory bank is accessed, written and managed in runtime.
- Transmission protocol structure and timing: Aligns with IEC 62386 bus messaging and timing rules for reliable communication over the lighting control bus.
- Declaration of variables and commands: Formalizes variables and command sets (including special commands such as ENABLE DEVICE TYPE) required to implement the extension.
- Electrical and bus power requirements: References electrical specification and bus power behaviour compatible with existing IEC 62386 control gear.
- Memory bank writing rules: Describes constraints and behaviours for updating memory bank content to support secure and predictable asset management.
Practical applications
- Asset management for lighting installations: Enables tracking of luminaire data (model, serial, commissioning info) stored directly on control gear for inventory, maintenance and lifecycle management.
- Smart building and facility management: Facilitates integration of lighting assets into building management systems and CMMS (computerized maintenance management systems).
- Manufacturers and OEMs: Use the standard to implement standardized memory structures and commands for interoperable control gear (Device Type 50).
- System integrators and specifiers: Rely on the extension to specify devices capable of holding and reporting asset information on the DALI bus.
- Certification and test labs: Validate compliance with memory bank behavior, command implementation and bus interoperability.
Related standards
- EN IEC 62386-101:2022 - General requirements for system components (required reference)
- EN IEC 62386-102:2022 - General requirements for control gear (mandatory applicability)
- Other IEC 62386 parts (e.g., firmware transfer and wireless components) provide complementary system-level requirements.
By standardizing Memory Bank 1 extension (Device Type 50), EN IEC 62386-251:2023 improves interoperability and enables consistent asset management features across compliant lighting control gear-beneficial for manufacturers, integrators and facility operators implementing digital lighting control systems.

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
