Overview

EN 60335-2-8:2015/A1:2016 is a European standard developed by the Comité Européen de Normalisation Électrotechnique (CENELEC) under the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) framework. This standard specifies particular safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances such as shavers, hair clippers, and related personal grooming devices. It serves as an amendment to the base EN 60335-2-8:2015, updating and clarifying aspects related to the design, construction, and testing of these appliances to ensure consumer safety during use.

Established in 2016, this standard supports compliance with EU directives, including the Low Voltage Directive (LVD 2006/95/EC) and references the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC). It applies to electrical appliances operating within certain voltage limits and also includes battery-operated and dual supply devices, covering a comprehensive range of grooming tools.

Key Topics

  • Safety Requirements for Shavers and Hair Clippers: The standard defines essential criteria electrical grooming devices must meet to prevent hazards such as electric shock, burns, and mechanical injuries.
  • Scope of Appliances Covered: Includes battery-operated appliances and those with dual supply modes, specifying operational safety when using battery power.
  • Supply Connection and Cords: Specific rules on supply cords for devices and battery charging units, ensuring electrical insulation and secure connections.
  • Amendments Clarifications: Updates encompass enhanced testing methods, definitions, and allowances relevant to evolving product technologies.
  • Standard Compliance and Implementation: Dates are provided for mandatory national adoption and withdrawal of conflicting standards, facilitating harmonized market entry across CENELEC member states.

Applications

This standard is critical for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and certification bodies engaged with:

  • Personal Care Appliance Manufacturing: Ensures design and production of shavers, hair clippers, and similar electric grooming tools meet unified European safety requirements.
  • Quality Assurance and Safety Testing: Provides testing protocols to verify devices meet electrical safety and operational standards.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Assists companies in aligning products with EU safety directives, enabling seamless certification and market access.
  • Product Development: Guides engineers and designers during innovation and prototyping phases to incorporate essential safety features.

The rigorous conformity to EN 60335-2-8:2015/A1:2016 improves consumer trust by minimizing risks associated with electrical grooming appliances in domestic environments.

Related Standards

  • EN 60335-1: General requirements for household and similar electrical appliances safety, serving as the foundational standard for EN 60335-2-8.
  • IEC 60335-2-8: The international counterpart providing the technical basis for the EN version, ensuring global harmonization.
  • EU Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC: Legal framework for electrical appliance safety in the European market, supported by this standard.
  • Directive 2006/42/EC (Machinery Directive): For relating essential safety requirements in the design of electrical grooming equipment.
  • Other Parts of the EN 60335 Series: Cover specific appliances such as vacuum cleaners, kitchen machines, and heating devices which may complement household appliance safety standards.

Adopting EN 60335-2-8:2015/A1:2016 ensures that household electrical grooming appliances meet stringent safety and quality benchmarks required by European legislation, fostering safe usage, reliability, and consumer confidence in electrical personal care products.
