Overview
IEC 61466-2:1998+AMD1:2002 CSV is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on composite string insulator units used in overhead power lines. Specifically, it applies to composite insulators with a specified mechanical load (SML) ranging from 40 kN to 210 kN for alternating current (a.c.) overhead distribution lines operating at nominal voltages greater than 1,000 volts and frequencies up to 100 Hz. The standard also covers insulators of similar design employed in substations and electric traction (railway) lines.
This consolidated version combines the original 1998 edition with the 2002 amendment, ensuring users have a single reference document that defines critical dimensional and electrical characteristics of composite string insulators. These insulators are essential components for electrical insulation, mechanical support, and enhancing reliability in power transmission and distribution networks.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability:
IEC 61466-2 addresses composite string insulators with mechanical strength capacities suitable for high-voltage overhead lines and related infrastructure. It is applicable to insulators designed to withstand mechanical loads between 40 kN and 210 kN.Dimensional Characteristics:
The standard specifies essential mechanical and dimensional parameters including:- Specified Mechanical Load (SML) classifications and related classifications (per IEC 61466-1)
- End fitting types and attachments
- Minimum creepage distances (critical for preventing electrical discharges)
- Minimum arc distance to avoid flashovers
- Maximum diameters of insulation parts, ensuring compatibility with fittings and line components
Electrical Characteristics:
Detailed electrical requirements are prescribed to ensure insulator performance under high-voltage conditions, including provisions for lightning impulse withstand levels up to 1,050 kV. The standard defines test methods and acceptance criteria aligned with IEC 61109.Marking and Designation:
Rules for systematic identification, marking, and designation of insulator units ensure traceability and conformity to specifications.Field Control and Arc Protection:
Guidelines for incorporating devices that monitor electrical field effects and protect against arcing faults enhance the safe operation of overhead lines.
Applications
IEC 61466-2 standardized composite string insulators are critical for the following applications:
High Voltage Overhead Distribution Lines:
Used extensively on overhead lines with operating voltages exceeding 1,000 V to provide reliable insulation and mechanical support.Substations:
Composite insulators conforming to this standard can be used in substations, ensuring durability and electrical performance under varying load and environmental conditions.Railway Electrification Systems:
Applicable to electric traction lines, enabling safe and efficient transmission of electrical power for railway operations.Power Transmission Infrastructure:
Integrated into composite string insulator assemblies to enhance the electrical isolation and mechanical integrity of power lines subjected to environmental stresses such as lightning, wind, and mechanical loading.
Related Standards
To fully comply with IEC 61466-2 and ensure holistic performance and testing, reference is made to several related IEC standards:
IEC 61466-1: Defines mechanical load classes and end fitting attachments for composite insulators, which are essential for understanding the dimensional compatibility and mechanical design of the units.
IEC 61109: Provides general definitions, testing methods, and acceptance criteria for composite insulators used on a.c. overhead lines above 1,000 V.
IEC 60071-1 & IEC 60071-2: These standards focus on insulation coordination principles and application guides, supporting the electrical design considerations referenced within IEC 61466-2.
Practical Value
Adhering to IEC 61466-2 assures manufacturers, utilities, and engineers that composite string insulators meet internationally recognized mechanical and electrical requirements. This promotes:
- Enhanced reliability and safety in overhead line operations
- Consistency in insulator production and performance
- Facilitated international trade and standardization compliance
- Streamlined testing and quality assurance procedures
By understanding and applying this standard, stakeholders can optimize insulator selection processes and improve overall network performance under high-voltage conditions, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.

1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
