Overview

IEC TR 62343-6-12:2023 is a Technical Report published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on performance specifications for 1 × N wavelength selective switches (WSSs). As part of the dynamic modules series, this document presents design guidelines based on survey results collected from industry experts, suppliers, and users of WSS technology. The report aims to establish a solid framework for drafting performance specification standards for 1 × N WSS devices, supporting consistency and interoperability in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical networks.

Wavelength selective switches are crucial components in reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs), enabling flexible routing of optical channels by switching signals at specific wavelengths between input and multiple output ports. While WSS modules can have multiple input and output ports, this report emphasizes the widely deployed 1 × N configuration, which involves one input fiber and multiple output fibers.

Key Topics

  • Survey-Based Performance Specification Framework: The document summarizes a comprehensive survey conducted among 18 companies, covering suppliers and users of WSSs, to collect proposed performance values and additional specification items relevant for 1 × N WSS characterization.

  • Performance Parameters: The standard outlines numerous critical parameters for WSS performance assessment, including:

    • Operating wavelength range (typical: 1528.578 to 1567.337 nm)
    • Number of ports and channels (up to 11 ports, 129 channels)
    • Channel spacing and frequency range compliant with ITU-T G.694.1 DWDM grid
    • Insertion loss and uniformity (≤ 7 dB)
    • Passband ripple and bandwidth specifications
    • Return loss and crosstalk metrics (adjacent, non-adjacent, total, and transient crosstalk)
    • Attenuation characteristics, including variable attenuation range and accuracy
    • Switching time and transient response performance
    • Polarization dependent loss and polarization mode dispersion
    • Environmental conditions (operating temperature, humidity)
    • Electrical and optical interfaces including fiber types and connectors
  • Test Methods Reference: The report aligns with IEC test procedures from related standards such as IEC 61300 series for optical component testing and IEC 62343-3-3 for performance specification templates, ensuring comprehensive assessment methodologies.

Applications

IEC TR 62343-6-12:2023 is highly valuable for:

  • Manufacturers of Wavelength Selective Switches: To guide the development of products that meet harmonized and market-accepted performance benchmarks.
  • Network Operators and System Integrators: For selecting compliant 1 × N WSS devices that assure reliable and efficient operation in DWDM networks, particularly in reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs).
  • Standardization Bodies: To use survey-driven data for the formulation and refinement of performance specification standards governing dynamic optical modules.
  • Testing and Certification Laboratories: To follow standardized test parameters and procedures, ensuring consistent quality verification and validation of WSS devices.
  • Research and Development: To innovate enhanced dynamic modules based on established performance profiles and to identify areas for further optimization.

Related Standards

The technical report references and complements several IEC and international standards including:

  • IEC 62343 Series: General standards and specific parts on dynamic modules, performance specifications, test methods, and design guidelines.
  • IEC 61300 Series: Test and measurement procedures for fiber optic interconnecting devices covering insertion loss, return loss, polarization dependencies, and switching time.
  • IEC 62074-1: Generic specification for fiber optic WDM devices.
  • ITU-T G.694.1: Defining spectral grids for DWDM applications.
  • IEC 60793-2-50: Product specifications for single-mode optical fibers.
  • IEC TR 62343-6-4: Design guides for reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers monitoring WSS modules integration.

By integrating survey insights and harmonizing with established test standards, IEC TR 62343-6-12:2023 offers an authoritative reference for optimizing 1 × N wavelength selective switch design and performance, fostering enhanced network flexibility and reliability in modern optical communications.
