ISO 3630-8:2026 - Dentistry — Endodontic instruments — Part 8: Accuracy of electronic apex locator
ISO 3630-8:2026 - Médecine bucco-dentaire ― Instruments d'endodontie — Partie 8: Précision du localisateur électronique d'apex
ISO 3630-8:2026 is an International Standard from ISO for dentistry. It specifies requirements and test methods for measuring the accuracy of electronic apex locators used to determine apex location during endodontic treatment, so manufacturers, test laboratories, and dental quality teams can assess these devices in a defined way.
What does ISO 3630-8:2026 specify?
ISO 3630-8:2026 covers how to measure the accuracy of electronic apex locators for endodontic treatment. It focuses on apex-location performance, and the introduction points users to other standards for electrical safety and biological evaluation.
The document is organized into:
- Clause 1 - Scope
- Clause 2 - Normative references
- Clause 3 - Terms and definitions
- Clause 4 - Requirements
- Clause 5 - Test methods, including test conditions, apparatus, reagent, and two procedures
- Clause 6 - Sampling
- Bibliography
Clause 5 includes two measurement approaches: one using a video-based measuring device and one using a height gauge. The figures show the root canal test block, the testing apparatus, and the height-gauge setup used in the measurements.
What are the key requirements of ISO 3630-8:2026?
Accuracy limit
ISO 3630-8:2026 requires the measured apex-location accuracy to be no more than ±0,5 mm when tested according to Clause 5. In practice, a device has to place the end of the file close enough to the reference apex position to stay within that half-millimeter limit.
Clause 4 also leaves the use of the symbols “+” and “-” to the manufacturer, but the instruction for use has to explain what they mean in relation to outside or inside the root canal. That matters because users need the display convention to be unambiguous when reading the locator.
Test setup and measuring equipment
ISO 3630-8:2026 requires testing at (25 ± 5) °C. That keeps the test conditions controlled so results can be compared.
The root canal test block in Clause 5.2.1 is a clear plastic block with a 2 % taper, a circular internal shape, and a simulated apex of 0,2 mm. Clause 5.2.2 specifies a Class 1, nominal size 15 endodontic file that is longer than the test block, and Clause 5.2.3 requires a video-based measuring device, or equivalent, with at least 0,01 mm accuracy. Clause 5.2.4 specifies a height gauge in accordance with ISO 13225.
The test liquid in Clause 5.3.1 is a commercially available 0,9 % sodium chloride solution prepared with grade III water complying with ISO 3696. Clause 5.2.5 requires a testing apparatus that keeps the apical end of the test block and the lip hook in contact with the liquid. In practice, that means the test has to simulate the electrical path used by the locator.
Measurement procedures
ISO 3630-8:2026 gives two procedures in Clause 5.4:
- 5.4.1 uses a video-based measuring device to observe the file tip when the locator indicates the apex, then records the distance to the reference surface.
- 5.4.2 uses a height gauge to set a reference position, then moves the file until the locator indicates the simulated apex and records the difference.
Clause 6 says to test three specimens at random. That supports a basic check that the result is not based on one specimen only.
What terms does ISO 3630-8:2026 define?
- Electronic apex locator - A device designed to detect the end of a tooth.
- Probe cord - The wire connecting the main unit to the lip hook, the file holder, or both.
- Lip hook / lip clip - The electrode in contact with the patient’s lip.
- File holder / file clip - The electrode attached to an endodontic file.
- Display - The screen showing the file tip position in the root canal relative to the apex.
- Root canal test block - A clear plastic block with an internal shape that simulates a root canal.
- Accuracy - The closeness of agreement between a measured value and the true value of the measurand.
Who uses ISO 3630-8:2026?
ISO 3630-8:2026 is used by manufacturers of electronic apex locators, dental test laboratories, and quality or regulatory teams that evaluate endodontic instruments. Buyers and specification writers can also use it when they need a technical basis for acceptance testing or product comparison. It is directly relevant to endodontic device testing and conformity assessment.
Which standards are used with ISO 3630-8:2026?
Clause 2 names these normative references:
- ISO 1942 - provides dental vocabulary used for terms and definitions.
- ISO 3630-1 - gives general requirements for endodontic instruments.
- ISO 3630-5 - supports the endodontic file specified for the test method.
- ISO 3696 - defines the water quality used to prepare the test liquid.
- ISO 13225 - specifies the height gauge used in one of the procedures.
The introduction and bibliography also point users to related standards for electrical safety and biological evaluation:
- IEC 60601-1
- IEC 80601-2-60
- ISO 10993-1
- ISO 7405
What does the ISO 3630-8:2026 document contain?
ISO 3630-8:2026 contains the scope, references, terms, performance requirement, and two detailed test methods for electronic apex locators. It also includes the sampling instruction to test three specimens at random.
The document provides an example of the root canal test block in Figure 1, an example testing apparatus in Figure 2, and an example height-gauge test system in Figure 3. Clause 5.4.1 and 5.4.2 describe how to obtain the reference values used to judge accuracy, and the bibliography points to the related safety and biocompatibility standards.
