Overview

ISO/IEC 23008-3:2026/Amd 1 is an amendment to the international standard for high efficiency coding and media delivery in heterogeneous environments, specifically addressing Part 3: 3D Audio. This amendment introduces media authenticity features to 3D audio bitstreams, enhancing integrity, reliability, and trust in high-efficiency audio delivery systems. By defining new syntax and semantics for handling authentication data, the amendment enables robust verification of audio content across varied platforms and applications.

Key Topics

  • Media Authenticity in 3D Audio: The amendment specifies how to embed authenticating information within MPEG-H 3D audio bitstreams using MHAS (MPEG-H Audio Stream) packets.
  • New Packet Types: The standard introduces new MHASPacketTypes such as PACTYP_AUTH_START, PACTYP_AUTH_SIG, PACTYP_UUID, PACTYP_TIMESTAMP, PACTYP_AUTH_TAG, and PACTYP_AUTH_SEQUENCE_AU_COUNTER to carry different media authenticity data.
  • Authentication Syntax and Semantics: Each authenticity-related packet type has a defined structure and purpose, such as carrying digital signatures, sequence counters, universal unique identifiers (UUIDs), and timestamps.
  • Optional Implementation: Media authenticity is optional-decoders in applications not requiring authenticity can ignore related packets, ensuring backward compatibility and flexible integration.
  • Hashing Algorithms and Providers: The amendment references recognized hash functions (SHA-1, SHA-224, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512) for signature calculation, and allows extensibility via authentication provider identifiers.
  • Adaptive Bitrate Support: The packet structure supports authentication of streams with adaptive bitrate (ABR) schemes, ensuring integrity in dynamic streaming environments.
  • Multi-Stream & Resilience Levels: Authentication information can be signaled for multi-stream scenarios and across multiple resilience levels, offering robust protection for complex media scenarios.

Applications

ISO/IEC 23008-3:2026/Amd 1 is applicable in a wide range of use cases, particularly where 3D audio content integrity is critical:

  • Broadcast and Streaming Services: Ensures transmitted or streamed 3D audio content is authentic and untampered, supporting content protection in professional audio streaming platforms.
  • Media Archiving: Enables long-term verification of audio assets in archives, essential for legal compliance and digital preservation.
  • Digital Rights Management (DRM): Complements existing DRM systems by adding robust, stream-integrated authenticity markers.
  • Multimedia Synchronization: UUIDs and timestamps allow cross-referencing with other media types (such as video), improving asset management and content synchronization.
  • Interactive and Immersive Media: Games, virtual reality, and augmented reality environments benefit from trustworthy, verifiable 3D audio assets.
  • Forensic and Legal Media: Supports chain-of-custody and evidentiary requirements by embedding signatures and timestamps at the bitstream level.

Related Standards

  • ISO/IEC 23008-3:2026
Core standard for MPEG-H 3D audio, defining underlying codecs and media transport.

  • IETF RFC 3986
Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) Syntax - referenced for embedding source URIs in authenticity metadata.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical
Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members
of ISO or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees
established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC
technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO and IEC, also take part in the work.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types of
document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the ISO/IEC
Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directiveswww.iso.org/directives or

Application-specific MHASPacketType values are mandated to be in the space reserved for use outside
of ISO scope. These shall be skipped by a decoder as a minimum of structure is required by the decoder
to skip these extensions.
After 14.4.19, add the following:

14.4.20  PACTYP_AUTH_START
The MHASPacketType PACTYP_AUTH_START may be used to embed information for media authentication
into the bitstream.
For this packet type, MHASPacketLabel has the same value as the related packets to which this authentication
information refers to.
14.4.21  PACTYP_AUTH_SIG
The MHASPacketType PACTYP_AUTH_SIG may be used to embed information for media authentication into
the bitstream.
For this packet type, MHASPacketLabel has the same value as the related packets to which this authentication
information refers to.
14.4.22  PACTYP_AUTH_UUID
The MHASPacketType PACTYP_UUID may be used to embed UUID information into the bitstream, for instance
in support of media authenticity.
© ISO/IEC 2026 – All rights reserved
ISO #####-#:####(X/IEC 23008-3:2026/FDAmd 1(en)

For this packet type, MHASPacketLabel has the same value as the related packets to which this UUID refers to.

14.4.23  PACTYP_TIMESTAMP
The MHASPacketType PACTYP_TIMESTAMP may be used to embed timestamp information into the bitstream,
for instance in support of media authenticity.

For this packet type, MHASPacketLabel has the same value as the related packets to which this timestamp
information refers to.
14.4.24  PACTYP_AUTH_TAG
The MHASPacketType PACTYP_AUTH_TAG may be used to embed information for media authenticity
associating (tagging) MHAS packets of MHASPacketType PACTYP_MPEGH3DAFRAME with one or more
resilience levels. If packets of MHASPacketType PACTYP_AUTH_TAG are present, they are expected to precede
their associated packet of MHASPacketType PACTYP_MPEGH3DAFRAME.
For this packet type, MHASPacketLabel has the same value as the associated packets of MHASPacketType
PACTYP_MPEGH3DAFRAME.
14.4.25  PACTYP_AUTH_SEQUENCE_AU_COUNTER
The MHASPacketType PACTYP_AUTH_SEQUENCE_AU_COUNTER may be used to embed information for
media authenticity associating MHAS packets of MHASPacketType PACTYP_MPEGH3DAFRAME with a
counter value. If packets of MHASPacketType PACTYP_AUTH_SEQUENCE_AU_COUNTER are present, they are
expected to precede their associated packet of MHASPacketType PACTYP_MPEGH3DAFRAME.
For this packet type, MHASPacketLabel has the same value as the associated packets of MHASPacketType
PACTYP_MPEGH3DAFRAME.

After 14.7, add:
14.8  Media Authenticity
Media authenticity is optional. If supported, the corresponding data is encapsulated in multiple MHAS packets
as part of an MHAS audio data stream.
MPEG-H 3D audio decoders used in applications which do not require media authentication and MPEG-H 3D
audio decoders which do not support media authentication as described in the current section shall ignore the
media authenticity MHAS packets. The process of media authentication and verification is out of scope for the
MPEG-H 3D audio decoders.
The media authenticity data is encapsulated in multiple MHAS Packets as part of an MHAS audio data stream.
14.8.1  Syntax
For the MHAS packet with MHASPacketType of PACTYP_AUTH_START, mpegh3daAuthStart() is defined as
shown in Table 233.
For the MHAS packet with MHASPacketType of PACTYP_AUTH_SIG, mpegh3daAuthSig() is defined as shown
in Table 234.
For the MHAS packet with MHASPacketType of PACTYP_UUID, authUUID() is defined as shown in Table 235.
For the MHAS packet with MHASPacketType of PACTYP_TIMESTAMP, authTimestamp() is defined as shown
