Overview
ISO 17078-2:2026 sets out internationally recognized requirements for subsurface flow-control devices used in side-pocket mandrels within the oil and gas industry, including lower carbon energy sectors. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this document is a critical resource for manufacturers, engineers, and quality assurance professionals involved in the design, selection, manufacturing, and quality control of flow-control devices.
This standard specifically addresses a wide range of flow-control device types, such as injection-pressure-operated (IPO), production-pressure-operated (PPO), pilot, orifice, tubing-retrievable, and dummy devices for use in side-pocket mandrels. The document covers essential requirements for performance, reliability, and quality, ensuring product consistency and global compatibility. While installation and retrieval processes, as well as devices with concentric axes and reconditioning practices, fall outside its scope, the standard supplements the API Spec 19G2 (2nd edition, 2020) with specific guidance relevant to global operations.
Key Topics
ISO 17078-2:2026 focuses on the following key areas:
- Device Types Covered: Requirements for various subsurface flow-control devices, including IPO, PPO, pilot, orifice, tubing-retrievable, and dummy devices.
- Design and Selection: Guidelines for selecting and optimizing designs of flow-control devices for compatibility with side-pocket mandrels.
- Manufacturing Standards: Specifications to ensure devices are consistently produced to high standards suitable for worldwide application in petroleum and natural gas operations.
- Quality Control: Recommendations on the implementation of quality management systems and standardized inspection and testing practices.
- Performance Testing and Calibration: Detailed guidance on testing requirements and performance validation to confirm the reliability and functionality of devices under operational conditions.
- Packaging and Shipping: Instructions on the proper preparation of flow-control devices to maintain integrity during transportation and storage.
Applications
Adhering to ISO 17078-2:2026 delivers practical value across petroleum, natural gas, and emerging lower carbon energy operations. Key applications include:
- Well Completion and Intervention: Ensuring dependable control over fluid flow, maintaining well integrity, and supporting efficient gas lift operations in side-pocket mandrel completions.
- Enhanced Oil Recovery: Providing reliable injectivity and flow management in wells using complex injection and production strategies.
- Quality Risk Management: Minimizing operational risks through standardized testing, validation, and manufacturing controls.
- Global Supply Chain Integration: Facilitating the use and exchange of flow-control devices internationally by harmonizing standards with API Spec 19G2 and related references.
- Regulatory Compliance: Supporting organizations in meeting regulatory and contract requirements for quality and performance in offshore and onshore oil and gas operations.
This standard is a vital reference for procurement professionals, equipment manufacturers, field service companies, and compliance managers committed to safety, efficiency, and product interoperability in the oil and gas sector.
Related Standards
In addition to API Spec 19G2 (2nd edition, 2020), ISO 17078-2:2026 provides cross-references and integrates requirements from several critical related documents:
- ISO 9000 - Quality management systems - Fundamentals and vocabulary
- ISO 17078-1 - Drilling and production equipment - Part 1: Side-pocket mandrels
- ISO 17078-3 - Drilling and production equipment - Part 3: Running tools, pulling tools, and kick-over tools and latches for side-pocket mandrels
- ISO 17078-4 - Drilling and production equipment - Part 4: Practices for side-pocket mandrels and related equipment
- ISO 16530-1 - Well integrity - Part 1: Life cycle requirements (guidance on well barrier elements)
- ISO 7-1 - Pipe threads where pressure-tight joints are made on the threads - Part 1: Dimensions, tolerances, and designation
By building on these foundational standards, ISO 17078-2:2026 provides an integrated framework that promotes equipment compatibility, safety, and operational excellence in drilling, production, and injection applications globally.
