EN ISO 17078-2:2026 is a CEN-adopted European Standard based on ISO 17078-2:2026 for the oil and gas industries including lower carbon energy. It specifies requirements for subsurface flow-control devices used in side-pocket mandrels, including selection, design, manufacture, quality control, testing, and preparation for shipping. The standard is aimed at manufacturers, operators, and test organizations working with IPO, PPO, pilot, orifice, tubing-retrievable, and dummy devices, and it supplements API Spec 19G2, 2nd edition (2020).
What does EN ISO 17078-2:2026 specify?
EN ISO 17078-2:2026 covers flow-control devices for side-pocket mandrels used in the worldwide petroleum and natural gas industry. It sets requirements for the devices themselves and leaves installation, retrieval, mandrels, tools, latches, and reconditioning outside its scope.
The document is organized into:
- Clause 1 - Scope
- Clause 2 - Normative references
- Clause 3 - Terms and definitions
- Clause 4 - Supplements to API Spec 19G2, 2nd edition (2020)
- Bibliography
Clause 4 is the main technical part. It adds general requirements, device descriptions, design practices, and a validation and functional testing overview.
What are the key requirements of EN ISO 17078-2:2026?
EN ISO 17078-2:2026 keeps API Spec 19G2 as the base document and adds the parts needed for side-pocket mandrel flow-control devices covered here.
- Clause 4.1 says the requirements of API Spec 19G2 apply, with specific substitutions. Where API Q1 is referenced, ISO 9000 applies; where API 19G1 is referenced, ISO 17078-1 applies; where API 19G3 is referenced, ISO 17078-3 applies; and where API 19G4 is referenced, ISO 17078-4 applies. In practice, users must follow the ISO series used by this standard.
- Table 1 in 4.2.1 adds device descriptions and groups, including IPO, balanced IPO, IPO with choke, PPO, pilot, orifice, venturi nozzle, shear orifice, dump/kill, dummy, and tubing-retrievable. This matters when ordering, naming, or qualifying the exact device type.
- Clause 4.2.2 gives minimum design practices. The gas passage entry port should be located in the SPM pocket undercut, the exterior should be rounded or beveled for handling, and the design should prevent accidental unseating while other devices are pulled through the mandrel.
- Clause 4.2.2 also adds tubing-retrievable guidance. The device is threaded to the mandrel, the full gas lift valve must remain within the gas lift mandrel outside diameter after connection, and a matched check valve or the lower part of the joint serves as the seat. The note points readers to ISO 7-1 for thread reference dimensions.
- Clause 4.3 and Table 2 define the validation and device functional test package by device grade. The matrix links device groups to tests such as probe or travel, load rate, flow, back-check, open and close, actuation life cycle, erosion, shelf, and port/seat leakage, so teams can select the right qualification plan.
- The scope and notes also point to ISO 16530-1 when a device may be used as a well barrier element. That is important for well integrity decisions in completion design.
What terms does EN ISO 17078-2:2026 define?
- Injection-pressure-operated (IPO) - a flow-control device that opens under injection pressure.
- Production-pressure-operated (PPO) - a flow-control device that operates under production pressure.
- Tubing-retrievable flow-control device - a flow-control device fixed to a side-pocket mandrel and retrieved through the tubing.
- Dummy flow-control device - a blank device installed in a side-pocket mandrel to prevent flow or pressure communication.
- Side-pocket mandrel - the mandrel that provides the side pocket where the flow-control device is installed.
- Flow-control device - a subsurface device used in a side-pocket mandrel to control flow.
Who uses EN ISO 17078-2:2026?
EN ISO 17078-2:2026 is used by manufacturers of downhole flow-control equipment, oil and gas operators, completion engineers, quality managers, and test laboratories. They use it to specify the correct device type, align design and quality control, plan validation and functional testing, and check shipping readiness for side-pocket mandrel applications.
What changed in EN ISO 17078-2:2026 from the previous edition?
EN ISO 17078-2:2026 supersedes EN ISO 17078-2:2007 and EN ISO 17078-2:2007/AC:2009. The foreword says this second edition is technically revised and fully reorganized, adds definition, description, design optimization, and requirements for tubing-retrievable flow-control devices, and adds ISO 16530-1 and ISO 7-1 to the bibliography.
Which standards are used with EN ISO 17078-2:2026?
- API Spec 19G2, 2nd edition (2020) - the base document that EN ISO 17078-2:2026 supplements.
- ISO 9000 - provides quality management fundamentals and vocabulary where API Q1 is referenced.
- ISO 17078-1 - covers side-pocket mandrels where API 19G1 is referenced.
- ISO 17078-3 - covers running tools, pulling tools, kick-over tools, and latches for side-pocket mandrels where API 19G3 is referenced.
- ISO 17078-4 - covers practices for side-pocket mandrels and related equipment where API 19G4 is referenced.
- ISO 16530-1 - is pointed to for well barrier requirements and guidance.
- ISO 7-1 - is pointed to for thread reference dimensions.
What does the EN ISO 17078-2:2026 document contain?
EN ISO 17078-2:2026 contains a device description table and a testing matrix. Table 1 classifies the flow-control device groups and types, while Table 2 maps device grades to validation and functional tests. Clause 4.2.2 sets minimum design practices for handling and seating, and Clause 4.3 points to tests for travel, load rate, flow, back-check, open and close, life cycle, erosion, shelf, and leakage. The document is mainly used for specification, qualification, and procurement of side-pocket mandrel flow-control devices.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
