Earth-moving machinery - Safety - Part 10: Requirements for trenchers

ISO 20474-10:2017 gives the safety requirements specific to trenchers as defined in ISO 6165. It is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 20474‑1, which specifies general safety requirements common to two or more earth-moving machine families. The specific requirements given in this document take precedence over the general requirements of ISO 20474‑1. ISO 20474-10:2017 deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to the earth-moving machinery within its scope (see ISO 20474‑1:2017, Annex A) when used as intended or under conditions of misuse reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer. It specifies the appropriate technical measures for eliminating or reducing risks arising from relevant hazards, hazardous situations or events during commissioning, operation and maintenance. ISO 20474-10:2017 is not applicable to machines manufactured before the date of its publication.

Overview

ISO 20474-10:2017 - "Earth-moving machinery - Safety - Part 10: Requirements for trenchers" specifies safety requirements specific to trenchers (as defined in ISO 6165) and is intended to be used together with ISO 20474‑1 (general safety requirements for earth‑moving machinery). This type‑C standard covers significant hazards, hazardous situations and events during commissioning, operation and maintenance of trenchers when used as intended or in reasonably foreseeable misuse. The specific requirements of ISO 20474-10 take precedence over the general requirements in ISO 20474‑1. It is not applicable to machines manufactured before its publication date.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & precedence
    • Applies only to trenchers and supplements ISO 20474‑1; specific trenchers’ requirements override general clauses where they differ.
  • Restraint bar
    • A restraint bar must be fitted and extend as far as practical over the length of the digging chain to reduce contact with digging elements.
  • Ride‑on trenchers
    • Operator’s seat and station requirements, including exceptions (e.g., transverse seats may not require fore/aft adjustment).
    • Additional or separate operator stations for attachments can have specific exemptions (cab, ROPS, FOPS).
  • Operator controls
    • Engine stop provisions: additional engine stop if a special-attachment seat cannot reach the normal stop per ISO 6682.
    • Control deactivation: travel and attachment movement must stop when the operator leaves the station.
  • Non‑riding (pedestrian) trenchers
    • Must include systems that stop travel and hazardous tool movement when operator releases controls.
    • Controls must be designed to prevent inadvertent movement toward the operator.
    • Lighting and warning-device provisions: ISO 12509 applies if lighting is fitted; some warning-device rules for pedestrian-controlled machines are modified.
  • Noise
    • Sound power and operator sound pressure measurements per ISO 6393 and ISO 6394.
    • Instruction to wear hearing protection when A‑weighted sound pressure exceeds 85 dB.
  • Information for use
    • User instructions must include hearing protection advice, deactivating device instructions, restraint bar safety rules, and guidance for pedestrian-controlled trenchers.

Applications - who uses ISO 20474-10:2017

  • Trenchers’ manufacturers for design, safety compliance and CE marking guidance
  • Safety and compliance engineers preparing risk assessments and technical files
  • Procurement teams specifying safe equipment for construction, utilities and pipeline work
  • Test laboratories measuring sound and validating control/deactivation systems
  • Operators and maintenance personnel relying on information-for-use and safety instructions

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/ directives).

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 127, Earth-moving machinery,
Subcommittee SC 2, Safety, ergonomics and general requirements.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 20474-10:2008), which has been
technically revised with the following changes:
— normative references have been updated;
— references to national and regional provisions in the withdrawn ISO/TS 20474-14 have been deleted;
— new safety requirements and protective measures have been added, and the illustrations of Annex A
updated.
It is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 20474-1.
