Overview

ISO 26622-3: Modular Taper Interface with Ball Track System – Dimensions of Shanks with Four Locking Elements establishes internationally recognized dimensional requirements for modular tapered shanks, specifically those utilizing a ball track system and four locking elements. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this standard supports automatic and manual tool exchange on a broad range of machine tools, such as lathes, drilling machines, milling machines, and turn/milling machine centres.

The standard provides crucial dimensional specifications for shank sizes and coolant-sealing features, helping manufacturers, machine builders, and tool users achieve reliable interchangeability, high accuracy in machining operations, and seamless integration with automatic tool exchangers. By adhering to the specifications in ISO 26622-3, the modular taper interface ensures repeatable clamping conditions, improved tool security, and enhanced performance in demanding industrial environments.

Key Topics

  • Dimensional Requirements
Defines key measurements for modular taper shanks, including tolerances for linear and angular dimensions, ensuring consistent fit and performance.

  • Design Features
Specifies the inclusion of a flange with a groove to enable automatic tool exchange and support for manual exchanges. The shank incorporates a ball track system for reliable mechanical clamping.

  • Locking Mechanisms
Standardizes the use of four locking elements (typically balls) in the interface, facilitating secure tool holding and repeatability.

  • Coolant Sealing
Details on high-pressure coolant tubes and O-rings are provided to maintain coolant integrity at interfaces, supporting modern, high-performance machining processes.

  • Material and Heat Treatment
Requires shanks to be made from high-strength tempered steel and undergo specific hardening and finishing protocols for durability.

  • Balancing Provisions
Recommends areas and methods for balancing the shank, especially vital for applications at high rotational speeds.

  • Clamping Force Recommendations
Offers guidance on minimum and maximum clamping forces for different shank sizes, optimizing the interface for various machining loads.

Applications

ISO 26622-3 is directly applicable in:

  • CNC Machine Tool Integration
Ensures compatible interfaces for automatic and manual tool changers on CNC lathes, mills, and multitasking machines.

  • High-Precision Machining
Supports industries requiring high accuracy and repeatability, such as automotive, aerospace, die and mold manufacturing, and general metalworking.

  • Production Line Tooling
Facilitates rapid tool exchanges in automated lines, reducing downtime and supporting flexible manufacturing strategies.

  • Tool and Holder Manufacturing
Provides toolholder and machine interface manufacturers with a unified specification, supporting global trade and supply chain efficiency.

  • Coolant-Through Tooling Systems
Enables reliable integration of high-pressure coolant systems through precise O-ring and tube specifications, enhancing cutting tool life and process stability.

Related Standards

For effective implementation and broader compatibility, ISO 26622-3 should be used together with related standards, including:

  • ISO 26622-4: Modular taper interface with ball track system – Dimensions of receivers, four locking elements.
  • ISO 8015: General geometrical product specifications and rules.
  • ISO 22081: General geometrical and size tolerancing.
  • ISO 1101: Geometrical tolerancing-Tolerances of form, orientation, location, and run-out.
  • ISO 3040: Dimensioning and tolerancing of cones.

Adhering to ISO 26622-3 ensures tool interchangeability, reliable coolant sealing, and mechanical security, helping manufacturers optimize performance and achieve international compatibility in machine tool applications.

éléments de verrouillage
1 Domaine d’application
