Those data elements that are not exchanged or not likely to be exchanged are ignored as they do not need standardization. Data elements being handled by transport protocols are not included, only those related to application level protocols. NOTE The French version of this International Standard does not contain synonyms for the data elements which explains the difference in length between the two versions.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 8459 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 46, Information and documentation, Subcommittee
SC 4, Technical Interoperability.
This first edition cancels and replaces ISO 8459-1, ISO 8459-2, ISO 8459-3, ISO 8459-4 and ISO 8459-5,
which have been technically revised.
It contains the data elements still in force today and incorporates a number of new ones linked to new types of
resources into a single document. It is presented in two basic parts:
a) a data element directory (Clause 3) where the different data elements are regrouped in different columns,
specifying for each of them its rank (a sequence number is allocated to each element), class, entry,
definition, examples and synonyms when existent;
b) an alphabetical sequence (Clause 4) which lists for each element its entry, equivalence, name, class and
sub-class.

Introduction
This International Standard specifies and describes data elements required in the interchange of data
between bibliographic systems (i.e. terminal or browser to computer or computer to computer). Data are
interchanged for the purpose of starting or supporting a process. In order to transmit information required to
support a process, the various elements of data in the interchanged messages must be fully understandable
to the processes concerned.
This International Standard is seen as serving as a resource tool for interoperability among standards in
bibliographic and library domains. It serves to harmonize the various different standards in these domains,
comprising content schemas, protocols, profiles and models. To this end, data elements are defined at various
levels because they may be defined at different levels in different protocols and schemas. The focus of the
standard is to provide common definitions for data elements that are exchanged in protocol messages
between systems.
System developers typically employ multiple standards and thus can profit from the identified inter-
relationships and definitions in their database designs to achieve dynamic inter-operability when employing
various standards.
This International Standard is also intended as a foundation for new standards. By inheriting element names
and definitions, new standards can be achieved in an efficient way that directly relates them with existing
standards in the field.
The inclusion of multiple examples and synonyms is also intended to assist in the translation of the standard
into other languages.
The elements from the previously published five parts of ISO 8459 have been examined, updated where
necessary and consolidated into a single set of elements such that this International Standard replaces these
previous parts.
There are no referenced documents that are indispensible for the application of this International Standard.
The Bibliography indicates sources consulted and used in the construction of this International Standard.
The standards cited in the Bibliography are examples for data elements in this International Standard but are
not prescriptive.
The list also contains reference to the protocol and schema standards that were used to validate the data
elements and concepts in this International Standard.

1 Scope
This International Standard describes, in the form of a directory, data elements used to support the processes
of acquisition, resource description and cataloguing, searching and requesting loan or copy by an end user or
an institution.
This International Standard includes data elements that are exchanged or are potentially exchanged among
bibliographic systems. Those data elements that are not exchanged or not likely to be exchanged are ignored
as they do not need standardization. Data elements being handled by transport protocols are not included,
only those related to application level protocols.
As part of the consolidation phase, the data elements were broadly classed and sub-classed and are
presented in two sequences, one by class and sub-class and the other by an alphabetical sequence. The
alphabetical sequence includes examples and synonyms identified during the consolidation phase and those
found in related interchange protocols and schemas.
As the grouping of data elements may differ among different protocols and record schemas, the data elements
have been broadly classed and grouped, but no further structure has been made. Similarly, the sequence of
data elements, whether or not a data element is mandatory or how it is structured and validated may vary
according to its employment and consequently these data element attributes are outside the scope of this
International Standard.
As new ways of inter-operating evolve, some new data elements may evolve, but the biggest change is
usually in the way that existing data elements are grouped. For example, whether a purchase transaction is
carried out manually or electronically, the base data elements of the transaction, requester, supplier and
object of purchase remain constant, and this is reflected in the fact that most data elements in this
International Standard originated several decades ago. To accommodate the potential changing grouping of
data elements, an attempt has been made to identify common concepts across processes. For example, a
new focus on end user delivery is causing diverse delivery options to be grouped together such that purchase,
loan and inter-library loan processes are presented as alternatives; therefore, the identification of common
concepts in all these processes is necessary for the development of seamless user interfaces.
NOTE The French version of this International Standard does not contain the column entitled “Synonyms” in Tables 2
to 12 for the following reasons:
⎯ a large number of the variant data element names translate to the same data element name in French;
⎯ a number of the variant data element names have been taken from standards which have not been translated into
French.
The difference between the English and French versions is particularly noticeable in Table 13.

3 Directory
3.1 General
The directory is organized, by class and sub-class, into a series of tables. The data element name is the
persistent identifier. A table is given for each class, and within the class, table row numbers have been
assigned so that when this International Standard is translated into other languages, there is an easy
reference to each data element and a clear sequence. The table row numbers are not unique, as each table
has its own sequence and they are not intended to be used as persistent identifiers of the data elements.
Table 1 summarizes the classes.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

ISO 8459 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 46, Information and documentation, Subcommittee
SC 4, Technical Interoperability.
This first edition cancels and replaces ISO 8459-1, ISO 8459-2, ISO 8459-3, ISO 8459-4 and ISO 8459-5,
which have been technically revised.
It contains the data elements still in force today and incorporates a number of new ones linked to new types of
resources into a single document. It is presented in two basic parts:
a) a data element directory (Clause 3) where the different data elements are regrouped in different columns,
specifying for each of them its rank (a sequence number is allocated to each element), class, entry,
definition, examples and synonyms when existent;
b) an alphabetical sequence (Clause 4) which lists for each element its entry, equivalence, name, class and
sub-class.

Introduction
This International Standard specifies and describes data elements required in the interchange of data
between bibliographic systems (i.e. terminal or browser to computer or computer to computer). Data are
interchanged for the purpose of starting or supporting a process. In order to transmit information required to
support a process, the various elements of data in the interchanged messages must be fully understandable
to the processes concerned.
This International Standard is seen as serving as a resource tool for interoperability among standards in
bibliographic and library domains. It serves to harmonize the various different standards in these domains,
comprising content schemas, protocols, profiles and models. To this end, data elements are defined at various
levels because they may be defined at different levels in different protocols and schemas. The focus of the
standard is to provide common definitions for data elements that are exchanged in protocol messages
between systems.
System developers typically employ multiple standards and thus can profit from the identified inter-
relationships and definitions in their database designs to achieve dynamic inter-operability when employing
various standards.
This International Standard is also intended as a foundation for new standards. By inheriting element names
and definitions, new standards can be achieved in an efficient way that directly relates them with existing
standards in the field.
The inclusion of multiple examples and synonyms is also intended to assist in the translation of the standard
into other languages.
The elements from the previously published five parts of ISO 8459 have been examined, updated where
necessary and consolidated into a single set of elements such that this International Standard replaces these
previous parts.
There are no referenced documents that are indispensible for the application of this International Standard.
The Bibliography indicates sources consulted and used in the construction of this International Standard.
The standards cited in the Bibliography are examples for data elements in this International Standard but are
not prescriptive.
The list also contains reference to the protocol and schema standards that were used to validate the data
elements and concepts in this International Standard.

1 Scope
This International Standard describes, in the form of a directory, data elements used to support the processes
of acquisition, resource description and cataloguing, searching and requesting loan or copy by an end user or
an institution.
This International Standard includes data elements that are exchanged or are potentially exchanged among
bibliographic systems. Those data elements that are not exchanged or not likely to be exchanged are ignored
as they do not need standardization. Data elements being handled by transport protocols are not included,
only those related to application level protocols.
As part of the consolidation phase, the data elements were broadly classed and sub-classed and are
presented in two sequences, one by class and sub-class and the other by an alphabetical sequence. The
alphabetical sequence includes examples and synonyms identified during the consolidation phase and those
found in related interchange protocols and schemas.
As the grouping of data elements may differ among different protocols and record schemas, the data elements
have been broadly classed and grouped, but no further structure has been made. Similarly, the sequence of
data elements, whether or not a data element is mandatory or how it is structured and validated may vary
according to its employment and consequently these data element attributes are outside the scope of this
International Standard.
As new ways of inter-operating evolve, some new data elements may evolve, but the biggest change is
usually in the way that existing data elements are grouped. For example, whether a purchase transaction is
carried out manually or electronically, the base data elements of the transaction, requester, supplier and
object of purchase remain constant, and this is reflected in the fact that most data elements in this
International Standard originated several decades ago. To accommodate the potential changing grouping of
data elements, an attempt has been made to identify common concepts across processes. For example, a
new focus on end user delivery is causing diverse delivery options to be grouped together such that purchase,
loan and inter-library loan processes are presented as alternatives; therefore, the identification of common
concepts in all these processes is necessary for the development of seamless user interfaces.
NOTE The French version of this International Standard does not contain the column entitled “Synonyms” in Tables 2
to 12 for the following reasons:
⎯ a large number of the variant data element names translate to the same data element name in French;
⎯ a number of the variant data element names have been taken from standards which have not been translated into
French.
The difference between the English and French versions is particularly noticeable in Table 13.

3 Directory
3.1 General
The directory is organized, by class and sub-class, into a series of tables. The data element name is the
persistent identifier. A table is given for each class, and within the class, table row numbers have been
assigned so that when this International Standard is translated into other languages, there is an easy
reference to each data element and a clear sequence. The table row numbers are not unique, as each table
has its own sequence and they are not intended to be used as persistent identifiers of the data elements.
Table 1 summarizes the classes.

L'ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération mondiale d'organismes nationaux de
normalisation (comités membres de l'ISO). L'élaboration des Normes internationales est en général confiée
aux comités techniques de l'ISO. Chaque comité membre intéressé par une étude a le droit de faire partie du
comité technique créé à cet effet. Les organisations internationales, gouvernementales et non
gouvernementales, en liaison avec l'ISO participent également aux travaux. L'ISO collabore étroitement avec
la Commission électrotechnique internationale (CEI) en ce qui concerne la normalisation électrotechnique.
Les Normes internationales sont rédigées conformément aux règles données dans les Directives ISO/CEI,
Partie 2.
La tâche principale des comités techniques est d'élaborer les Normes internationales. Les projets de Normes
internationales adoptés par les comités techniques sont soumis aux comités membres pour vote. Leur
publication comme Normes internationales requiert l'approbation de 75 % au moins des comités membres
votants.

L'ISO 8459 a été élaborée par le comité technique ISO/TC 46, Information et documentation, sous-comité
SC 4, Interopérabilité technique.
Cette première édition de l’ISO 8459 annule et remplace l’ISO 8459-1, l’ISO 8459-2, l’ISO 8459-3,
l’ISO 8459-4 et l’ISO 8459-5 qui ont fait l’objet d’une révision technique.
Elle rassemble dans un seul document les éléments de données en vigueur aujourd'hui et en comprend
d'autres liés aux nouveaux types de ressources. Elle est présentée en deux parties principales:
a) un répertoire (Article 3) où les différents éléments de données décrits sont regroupés dans différentes
colonnes, donnant, pour chacune d'elles, son rang (un numéro d'ordre est affecté à chaque élément de
données), sa classe, sa sous-classe, sa définition et des exemples lorsqu'ils existent;
b) un ordre alphabétique (Article 4) qui englobe pour chaque élément de données, son équivalence, son
nom, sa classe et sa sous-classe.

Introduction
La présente Norme internationale spécifie et décrit les éléments de données nécessaires à l’échange de
données entre les systèmes bibliographiques (c’est-à-dire de terminal ou de navigateur à ordinateur ou
d’ordinateur à ordinateur). Les données sont échangées dans l’objectif d’initialiser un processus ou de servir
de support à un processus. Afin de transmettre les informations à l’appui d’un processus, les différents
éléments de données des messages échangés doivent pouvoir être compris par les processus concernés.
La présente Norme internationale est censée servir d’outil de ressource pour assurer l’interopérabilité entre
les normes des domaines bibliographiques et des bibliothèques. Elle sert à harmoniser les nombreuses
normes différentes de ces domaines, qui englobent les schémas, les protocoles, les profils et les modèles liés
aux contenus. À cette fin, les éléments de données sont définis à plusieurs niveaux car ils peuvent l’être aux
différents niveaux des protocoles et des schémas. La présente Norme internationale vise essentiellement à
fournir une définition commune des éléments de données échangés dans les messages de protocole entre
systèmes.
Les développeurs de systèmes, utilisant généralement de nombreuses normes, peuvent ainsi bénéficier des
interrelations identifiées dans les structures des bases de données, assurant une interopérabilité dynamique
entre ces diverses normes.
La présente Norme internationale est également destinée à servir de socle à de nouvelles normes. En héritant
du nom et des définitions des éléments de données, de nouvelles normes peuvent être mises au point de
façon efficace qui les rattachent directement aux normes existantes dans ce domaine.
L’incorporation de nombreux exemples est également destinée à faciliter la traduction de la présente Norme
internationale dans d’autres langues.
Les éléments de données des cinq parties de l’ISO 8459 précédemment publiées ont été analysés, mis à jour
au besoin et réunis en un seul jeu d'éléments de données, si bien que la présente Norme internationale
remplace les cinq parties antérieures.
Il n'existe pas de documents de référence indispensables à l'application de la présente Norme internationale.
La Bibliographie mentionne les sources consultées et utilisées pour la construction de la présente Norme
internationale.
Les normes citées dans la Bibliographie à titre d’exemples d’éléments de données de la présente Norme
internationale ne sont pas prescriptives.
Cette liste donne également les références des normes de protocoles et de schémas qui ont servi à valider
les éléments de données et les concepts décrits dans la présente Norme internationale.

1 Domaine d’application
La présente Norme internationale décrit, sous la forme d’un répertoire, les éléments de données à l’appui des
processus d’acquisition, de description de ressources et de catalogage, de recherche, de demande de prêt ou
de duplication qui s’adressent à l’utilisateur final ou à un établissement.
La présente Norme internationale comprend les éléments de données qui sont échangés ou qui peuvent
l’être, entre systèmes bibliographiques. Les éléments de données qui ne sont pas échangés ou non
susceptibles de l’être, sont laissés de côté car ils ne requièrent pas de normalisation. Les éléments de
données véhiculés par les protocoles de transport ne sont pas pris en compte; seuls le sont ceux liés aux
protocoles au niveau de l’application.
Au cours de la phase de consolidation, les éléments de données ont été groupés en grandes classes et sous-
classes et sont présentés en deux listes, une liste par classe et sous-classe, suivie d’une liste alphabétique.
La liste alphabétique comprend les exemples identifiés durant la phase de consolidation et ceux trouvés lors
d’échanges entre protocoles et schémas.
Comme le regroupement des éléments de données peut varier entre les différents protocoles et schémas
d’enregistrement, les éléments de données ont été rassemblés en grandes classes et en grands groupes,
mais aucune structure n’a été établie. De même, comme la liste des éléments de données, qu’il s’agisse d’un
élément de données obligatoire ou non ou que la façon dont il est structuré et validé, soit précisée, peut varier
en fonction de son utilisation, les attributs de ces éléments de données se trouvent par conséquent en dehors
du champ d’application de la présente Norme internationale.
Comme les nouveaux moyens d’interopérabilité évoluent, certains nouveaux éléments de données pourront
évoluer, mais le changement le plus important porte habituellement sur la façon dont les éléments de
données existants sont groupés. Par exemple, qu’une transaction d’acquisition soit effectuée manuellement
ou sous forme électronique, les éléments de données de base de la transaction, le demandeur, le fournisseur
et l’objet de cette acquisition demeurent pérennes. Ce constat tient au fait que la plupart des éléments de
données de la présente Norme internationale a été établie il y a plusieurs décennies. Pour faire face à des
modifications éventuelles des regroupements de ces éléments de données, un effort a été consenti pour
identifier les notions communes aux différents processus. Par exemple, l’accent mis sur la fourniture de
prestations à un utilisateur final entraîne le regroupement de différentes options, si bien que les processus
d’acquisition, de prêt et de prêt inter-bibliothèques sont présentés comme des solutions au choix. Il s’ensuit
que l’identification des notions communes à tous les processus s’avère nécessaire pour mettre au point des
interfaces transparentes.
NOTE La version française de la présente Norme internationale ne comporte pas la colonne des synonymes dans
les Tableaux 2 à 12 pour les raisons suivantes:
⎯ un grand nombre de noms variables d’élément de données se traduit par le même nom d’élément de données en
français;
⎯ un certain nombre de noms variables d’élément de données a été extrait de Normes internationales qui n’ont pas été
traduites en français.
Par conséquent, le Tableau 13 est considérablement plus court dans la version française que dans la version anglaise.

3 Répertoire
3.1 Généralités
Le répertoire est organisé en classes et sous-classes dans une série de tableaux. Le nom de l'élément de
données est l'identifiant persistant. Un tableau correspondant à chaque classe est produit et, au sein de
chaque classe, des numéros de rang ont été attribués aux tableaux si bien que, si la présente Norme
internationale est traduite dans d'autres langues, il soit aisément fait référence à chaque élément de données
et suite d'éléments de données. Les numéros de rang ne sont pas uniques car chaque tableau a sa propre
séquence et ils ne sont pas destinés à servir d'identifiant des éléments de données. Le Tableau 1 donne un
récapitulatif des classes.
