Information and documentation - Research activity identifier (RAiD)

This document defines the use and structure of the Research Activity Identifier (RAiD) system. The RAiD system includes a registry which supports the identification of research projects, i.e. projects managed in a scholarly or industrial environment which are expected to lead to specified outputs. It also specifies the RAiD metadata record which holds key metadata relating to the identified project and indicates relationships to other entities and their persistent identifiers and metadata. RAiD is an identifier for research projects and sub projects or tasks within such projects. It is not itself an identifier for any individual, group or institution, it is not a repository for project documentation or deliverables, nor is it a repository, platform or storage method. It does not apply to research outputs.

Informatika in dokumentacija - Identifikator raziskovalne dejavnosti (RAiD)

Ta dokument opredeljuje uporabo in strukturo sistema identifikatorja raziskovalne dejavnosti (RAiD).

Overview

ISO 23527:2022 - Information and documentation - Research activity identifier (RAiD) defines the structure, use and governance of the Research Activity Identifier (RAiD) system. RAiD is a persistent identifier for research projects, sub‑projects or tasks and is intended to place the research activity at the centre of research workflows. The standard specifies a RAiD name, a corresponding RAiD metadata record, and the RAiD register managed by a Registration Authority. RAiD supports discovery, provenance and attribution and helps implement the FAIR principles for research data (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Identifier scope: RAiD identifies research activities (projects, sub‑projects, tasks). It is explicitly not an identifier for individuals, institutions, or research outputs, nor a repository for deliverables.
  • RAiD name format: Case‑insensitive, unique alphanumeric string split into a prefix and suffix (/). Human presentation must be preceded by “RAID ” (e.g., “RAID 123456/654321”).
  • Registration Authority responsibilities:
    • Maintain the RAiD register (database of names + metadata records).
    • Assign/register RAiD names on application once required metadata meet assignment policy.
    • Publish technical information and APIs for requesting and resolving RAiDs.
    • Ensure uniqueness and persistence of RAiD names.
  • RAiD metadata record: A manifest that links the activity name to structured metadata and relationships to other persistent identifiers. Minimum elements include associations to:
    • Research organizations (ISNI, GRID, ROR)
    • Contributors (ORCID, ISNI, email)
    • Instruments, data, specimens (DOI, handle, IGSN)
    • Publications (DOI), grants (grant identifier), funders (organization identifier), related projects (RAiD), and local identifiers
  • Governance and principles: Annex A–C cover assignment principles, administration and implementation guidance (e.g., no semantic encoding in identifiers; document relationships when activities split or merge).

Applications and who uses it

  • Research administrators and funders: track project lifecycles, grants and outputs.
  • Data stewards and repository managers: link datasets and specimens to the originating activity for provenance.
  • Publishers and infrastructure providers: resolve and display project context, enable machine‑actionable links.
  • Research consortia and institutions: manage subprojects/tasks and document relationships between activities. Using RAiD improves discoverability, attribution and reporting across scholarly and industrial research workflows.

Related standards and identifiers

  • DOI (ISO 26324), ISNI (ISO 27729), ORCID, ROR, IGSN, GRID - RAiD metadata is designed to reference these existing persistent identifier systems to create interoperable links across research entities.

Introduction
The research activity identifier (RAiD) is a persistent identifier for research projects and supports data
management across all phases of research by placing the research activity (or project) at the centre of
research workflows, creating a chain of provenance, improving discovery and access, and ensuring that
output is attributable and reportable.
[8]
It also supports the F.A.I.R Principles of making research data findable, accessible, interoperable, and
re-usable.
A RAiD name is associated with a RAiD metadata record.
The RAiD metadata record holds metadata including standard identifiers that relate to research entities
or objects encountered by or related to the activity. This includes participant institutions (by use of
ISNI, GRID or ROR) and researchers (ORCID ID, ISNI or other identifier).

The ISO 23527:2022 standard, titled "Information and documentation - Research activity identifier (RAiD)," provides a well-defined framework for the structure and use of the Research Activity Identifier system. The scope of this document is significant as it addresses the need for a systematic approach to identifying research projects in both scholarly and industrial settings, thereby enhancing the visibility and traceability of research activities. One of the key strengths of the ISO 23527:2022 standard is its emphasis on a comprehensive registry that supports the identification of research projects expected to yield specific outputs. By codifying the relationships between research projects and other entities through persistent identifiers and relevant metadata, the standard facilitates better integration and interoperability among different research systems. This structure not only helps researchers and institutions manage their projects more effectively but also aligns with global efforts to improve research transparency and reproducibility. Moreover, the RAiD system serves as a robust identifier for research projects and sub-projects or tasks, clearly delineating itself from identifiers meant for individuals, groups, or institutions. This clear differentiation is critical, as it allows stakeholders to focus on the research activities themselves rather than be sidetracked by unrelated identifiers. Additionally, the specification of the RAiD metadata record is another strength, as it holds key metadata that enriches the understanding of a project’s context and significance. The relevance of ISO 23527:2022 in today’s research landscape cannot be overstated. With the increasing complexity of collaborative research and the growing need for accountability and data management, the RAiD system provides essential tools to navigate these challenges. This standard is poised to enhance project identification and improve the organizational landscape of research documentation. In summary, ISO 23527:2022 excels in establishing a clear and operational framework for the RAiD system, with its strengths anchored in project identification and metadata management. Its scope and relevance make it a critical asset in the ongoing evolution of research activity documentation and identification.
