Overview
ISO 15822:2007 - Test method of doorset opening performance in diagonal deformation (Seismic aspects) specifies a laboratory test method to evaluate whether a single-leaf doorset can be opened and unlocked after experiencing in-plane diagonal deformation representative of seismic action. The standard uses a static in-plane load to induce diagonal deformation and measures the forces and torques needed to unlock and open the door throughout a stepped deformation sequence.
Keywords: ISO 15822:2007, doorset opening performance, diagonal deformation, seismic aspects, in‑plane displacement, unlocking torque, opening force.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies to single-leaf doorsets; assesses opening function under in‑plane diagonal deformation by static load.
- Test principle: Gradually apply static force to produce diagonal deformation and measure the force/torque required to unlock and open the door.
- Test specimen: Installed in conditions equivalent to normal practical use; glazed areas use manufacturer’s specified glass or minimum specified thickness.
- Test apparatus:
- Rigid pin-joint test rig to secure the doorset,
- Device to apply static in‑plane force (upper or lower horizontal frame),
- Displacement measuring devices (horizontal and vertical) at defined exterior measuring points,
- Devices to measure opening force (pull/push at handle) and unlocking torque.
- Displacement steps: In‑plane displacement (R, in radians) is tested at eight standard steps: ±1/400, ±1/300, ±1/200, ±1/150, ±1/120, ±1/90, ±1/75 and ±1/60 (parties may agree alternative steps).
- Measurements and observations:
- Record unlocking torque (to 0.1 N·m) and opening force (to 10 N) at the first and third cycle of each step,
- Visually inspect and record deformation, damage, hardware abnormalities,
- Stop criteria: failure to operate or specified number of cycles completed.
- Results & reporting: Report in‑plane displacement, maximum unlocking torque, maximum opening force, deformation/damage locations and degree, test specimen identification, mounting method, test organisation and date.
Applications and who uses it
- Test laboratories: To perform standardized seismic performance tests on doorsets.
- Door and hardware manufacturers: To validate product design for seismic resilience and emergency egress performance.
- Specifiers and consultants: Architects, seismic and structural engineers use results to select compliant doors for buildings in seismic zones.
- Building code officials and safety assessors: Use test evidence when evaluating emergency egress and continuity of operation after earthquakes.
- Product certification bodies: Base conformity assessment and marking on standardized test data.
Keywords: doorset testing, seismic door performance, emergency egress, test rig, unlocking torque.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 15822 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 162, Doors and windows.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in ISO 1804 and the following apply.
3.1
in-plane displacement
ratio of difference in amounts of horizontal movements of upper and lower ends to the distance between the
vertical measuring points
NOTE In-plane displacement is designated in units of radians.
